Scott Boras proposes best of 9 game World Series

adamb100

I love the neutral site idea.

Perhaps -- however, it seems to me that the big fish is the TV ratings. I don't think the neutral site does anything to help TV ratings at all, and I think a nine game series is only going to weaken the TV ratings -- baseball would probably join the NBA where playoff games are shown primarily on cable.

You could just have the first game at a neutral site, with the remaining games going 2, 2, 1, 1. It would do away with the silly All-Star/home field advantage thing.

Of course, like the Superbowl, there may not be very many actual fans of the two teams at that first game. They would have to make available15-20k tickets to each team to make it palatable to me.

like the Superbowl

I don't think that the World Series is at all the event that the Super Bowl is anymore. I bet if teams like the Marlins made the WS, you would not get a local (neutral) fan attendance at all, nor can I imagine a lot of Marlin fans traveling to a neutral site

Also the SB is really not neutral -- it is predetermined -- a SB could actually be a home game for some team one of these years. Generally the FB sites were chosen because of the warmth/vacation destination advantages.

I know you are not comparing the SB to GM 1 of the WS -- but I just thought I would run with the comparison.

I think making the game in an event would further market the game, increasing the TV ratings.

I think while Boras said nuuetral site, he also meant just a predetermined site. I think Selig would definately only choose major League cities, and only ones with quality ballparks, much like they do with All-Star games.

But Marlins fans wouldn't turn out for a home game either, so what is lost? That problem is a Florida Marlin problem, not a World Series Event problem.

I still just like homefield advantages. If the MIller Park All-Star game didn't end in a tie, would we have the rule? If you have the best record in baseball, you should get homefield and the other team has to deal w/ the fact they didn't. The Super Bowl I wish would be the same, but the tons of people that go and all that would never let that happen. It's a one game deal...baseball is up to 7 and that's the difference in sites.

Baseball never had a rule that gave homefild to the team with the best record. It rotated home field advantage on a yearly basis before the new rule. Even if it did, you'd still get the advantage just the same in the Boras idea. The predetermined site is only for 2 games.

I think the series should stay how it is, however, I thought I'd throw in this article my math professor wrote about his own proposed changes to the World Series format:

http://www.slate.com/id/2108817/

Here's the main proposal:

Quote:
Suppose we play an "Alternate World Series" that ends when a team is up 3-0, 4-1, 4-2, 5-3, or 5-4. The AWS turns out to be shorter than the standard World Series; the chance of the series going eight or nine games is balanced out by the possibility of a 3-0 skunking. What's more, the AWS has a slightly better chance of selecting the stronger team than does the real World Series.

The rest of the article gives mathematical backing to his idea. I thought it was pretty interesting if nothing else.

Heck, I still hate the wildcard and interleague play

A nine game WS would be too much. Why mess with a sport that has been gaining in popularity for at least ten straight years?
