can you tell people are excited?

Recommended Posts

The forums are doing OK, but they're housed on some monster servers at EZBoard that are meant to handle large traffic.

The "main" site died a few times yesterday. I'm trying to figure out what the bottleneck is that kills it when traffic is high.

EDIT: I'm thinking the bottleneck has to do with the images contained in the forums. Each time an image is requested (usually if someone hits a page for the first time or a user hits refresh), a hit is made at the "main" site. Each image on this page (all of the team names and their corresponding reollover images, the header image, the advertisement image, the support and fansite alliance images) count as a hit. If you get enough people refreshing on a busy day, KABOOM.

I'm using an image hosting service's trial membership to host just the top brewerfan.net image (the image with miller park, and the mascot in it). In less than a month, it has been request some 50,000 times, for about 698MB of bandwidth. I cap out there at 1000MB of bandwidth for free, so i'm thinking about paying for an upgrade. The less requests that get made from the "main" site, the snappier performance will be all around.

This IS a brilliant site, and thanks to Brian and the rest of the brain-trust for putting it together and making it the clear cut #1 site for Brewer news and comment on the internet!

You have created the site where Die-hard fans come together to get excited, and you also apparently are now a prime source for some visitors.

I was one of those visitors for the previous year and a half. I really should have joined in earlier, but for whatever reason didn't. I can honestly say my Brewer IQ increased dramatically just by reading the articles, forums and link reports daily. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I guess I've just been lucky then, as I don't think I've come to this stie and found it to be down for months now. Then again, I'm typically working (with no computer) and in class until after the rest of you guys have completed the workday when the site is bombarded the heaviest.

excuse my computer illiteracy, but I have a question regarding what was posted above regarding the hits on the main page causing a bottleneck.

Should I change Brewerfan from my homepage? That ends up giving the site lots of extra hits when I really have no intention of cruising the site.

Does this affect the cost of running the site as well? I know that there was some talk about more traffic costing the site more $ to run.
