Capellan traded to DET

Short memory, DH. Jose has a very nice curve/slider, his inability to find the plate with it is why he had a poor last month plus last year.

 

I never saw signs of a "very nice curve/slider." I saw a pitcher that occasionally threw a breaking pitch just so that hitters wouldn't be expecting his 91 mph straight fastball. And it seemed that the breaking pitch never resulted in strikeouts...instead it was usually hung and roped for a hit, or a ball off the plate.

I'm happy to see him go. I never wanted him to wear a Brewers uni again and now he probably won't. What I like the most is that we won't see him for a long time even if he did turn things around.

First, how do you know that he didn't apologize? Do you have a link? If so, I missed the story, and thanks for bringing it into the discussion. That obviously makes a big difference in assessing his behavior. I just assumed that he wouldn't have been able to avoid making his peace with his teammates, but I can see how that assumption might be wrong.

 

Second, I'm not sure how my suggestion that people were making relatively too much of what I clearly agreed was Capellan's bad behavior translates into a belief that "he's a swell guy." In fact, I can't figure out how anybody could get from my words to yours. Can you please explain how you did? Thanks.

He was upset at being sent down and handled it poorly. Not sure why I should wish bad things to happen to him. I'm glad than Melvin held out until he could get something reasonable in return.

I was never a big Capellan fan so I'm not sad to see him go, but I am not going to wish anything bad on him.

I agree with the good riddence Latin Cappy sentiments. I was willing to dump him for nothing, and I've been on record cracking on people for the bag of balls thing in the past. His attitude and lack of performance irritated the heck out of me. Yo to the pen, and an A+ level arm, nice job Doug, even if the lefty doesn't pan out.

I think maybe folks are being a little harsh about Capellan's attitude problem. He was the team's best reliever last year, he didn't do anything wrong, and he got sent down.

 

I agree people are a little harsh on him but it's a stretch to say he was the best reliever on this team. Wise, Turnbow, Coco and even Shouse all managed to pitch pretty well for equivelant stretches of time last year. He has moments were you could make that arguement but his overall body of work wasn't very impressive IMO. I think the fact that he melted down late in the year and came back to spring training out of shape indicated to the Brewers braintrust that he wasn't dedicated enough to improve on what he already is. That's why I'm happy we got something for him. If he's just happy to be here and didn't do everything he could to improve on his mediocre season last year I'm not sure he will ever be more than he is now. That's simply not good enough for this team.

Actually one of the Brewers AAA players mentioned that he didn't in an article. I don't remember which one but I do recall the players were not impressed with his act or lack of contrition.

I'm willing to grant José his public pout. Heck, had the AWOL thing come right away, I might be willing to grant him that, too. Going AWOL a month after the demotion doesn't fly, though.

 

The Brewers handled this right. They didn't call him up after going AWOL, they did call him up when needed later, and they accommodated his trade request when they found a deal and could make sure they probably had enough pitchers.

I think Jose is destined for a very typical middle relief career bounce around having good years and bad years make a few million and hope he can land with a bad team and sneak into the closers role to artificially inflate his value.

A pitcher doesn't have to do anything "wrong" to not make the team out of camp, you can be simply less effective than the other pitchers. I think his "public pout" became a distraction for what was the real issue -- his lack of velocity in ST. After his pout/AWOL -- the problems that were apparent to DM and Ned in ST were never fixed/resolved.

 

I am really happy with this move -- once Yo got promoted all our farm teams had a starter move up as well, so there is probably a lot of wisdom in hooking into a LH starter.

 

I think Spurling is very acceptable in the 12th man role, and I do not see the point in releasing Dessens if we have to pay the dude. Heck, if Matt Wise gets tonged or Tbow starts getting greased, a guy like Dessens is not a bad emergency BP guy. I would rather our AAA guys keep getting regular pitching than having them rot on our BP bench, Elmer on the other hand can rot away.

GM DM handled things well like an old pro does...what Cody becomes could be closer to Woolard than CVilla but it's good to get Yo a place to show his stuff and keep his innings down...and to show Cappy the door.

 

I think that if Yo's WHIP and ERA stay low he will be more than a mop up guy and might evolve into a Wise sub by the end of the year...only to start next year...

 

As far as Dessens "injury" situation is concerned...the fake injury/DL listing was perfected by the mid 80's Celtics ("Hey, Greg Kite, you just pulled your hamstring.")...and my initial thought as well...but if he still cannot pitch...maybe not so fake...

I realize this post would have sounded a lot wiser about 30 months ago, but if I were named general manager of a major league franchise, the first thing I would do is have a sampler made to hang on the wall above my computer. That sampler would read, "Never make trade for young Atlanta Braves pitchers or their pitching prospects," and it would include a collage of Damian Moss, Horacio Ramirez, Odalis Perez, Jose Capellan, and, in the very center, Bruce Chen.

 

Nobody seems to know his pitching prospects as well as John Schuerholz, and if he is giving one up, you can be pretty sure he knows better than anyone what that guy's ceiling is.

You forgot Dan Meyer, the next coming of Mark Mulder. I totally agree with your post - never trade for a Braves pitching "prospect" and expect him to be a solid Major Leaguer, because they've already dismissed him as a bust.

Does anyone else think this is similar to the Shouse trade last year in reverse? Last year we were desperate for relief help and couldn't/wouldn't give up much to get it. Detroit this year is very weak in the pen so they gave up something that wouldn't hurt now, or perhaps ever, and got someone who will help some. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a few more trades like this to see what sticks. I was reading some comments from the Detoit Free Press today. They seem to think he's got mid 90's fastball with a good slider that he can't control all the time. Are the in for a surprise when he averages 91 on his fastball.

Greg, let's not forget, these guys aren't all intelligent or well read, they are often uneducated, but good athletes. Jose may well have some language issues as well.
