Locking of threads

Brewer Fanatic Contributor
I really wish there was a consistent policy on this. It seems like there is locking just because someone with that authority doesn't agree with the post, or a warning just because a person with authority agrees with the post. This goes for both sides. Just want to point that out as an impartial observer.

I think that people are forgetting that if it wasn't for Brian, this website would not exist; he is spending his time and energy to provide us with a service. If he wants things to be a certain way, then I don't really see anyway that people can argue about it. It's not like you're losing civil rights here, it's just that when you come to this board willingly, you accept the guidelines about content that everything needs to abide by.

Not that my opinion matters a whole lot, but the original joke didn't wreck that thread so much as the subsequent post. That one actually came from a moderator (Al) and seemed to provoke angry responses...justifiably so, IMO. I can't speak for Toby, of course, but that seems like what caused him to lock.

All that said, the off-topic forum isn't the place to look for examples of moderator behavior...by its very nature it's less central and more subject to opinion. I think the mods do a nice job of keeping things civil overall.

ok just to lighten the tone of the thread:

I have a lot of French in me.

Whenever I see a hot chick, I go up to her and ask her if she has some Mexican in her. When she says no (presumably), then I just ask her if she would like some. Usually worth a slap in the face. Anyway feel free to use it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

"They stank and I hate 'em!"

Usually worth a slap in the face. Anyway feel free to use it.

Yeah Weez, that probably works as well as when I ask if they'd like me to take off my pants and start the revolution.

[ I missed the part where somebody actually said that. ]

Well, you know...

- French people smell bad and are snooty

- Polish people are dumb

- Black people are criminals and like fried chicken

- Mexican people often get into knife fights

Duh. It's all common knowledge. Since it's apparently OK to generalize and stereotype French people, maybe we should expand our horizons and make fun of all groups of people. What could possibly go wrong?

And anyone outside the United States thinks we're all a bunch of loud-mouthed cowboys... Feel free to look at it whatever angle you'd like to.

I think it's human nature to generalize. Unfortunately we live in an age where it's more important not to hurt anyone's feelings than to get a laugh. While I understand the reasoning behind generalizations not being at all popular here at brewerfan.net and will continue to abide and support that rule, I still think people shouldn't take themselves and others too seriously in other walks of life.

I think a world where we don't poke fun at each other (even if it isn't true) is not a happy place. All people really should take time out to understand the difference between all out harmful racism and someone saying (or typing for that matter) something in an attempt at humor. People getting bent out of shape because someone says that the British are too uptight or have funny teeth can be taken as an excuse for condescension, which is the same outcome, but the other side of this whole thing.

We're all imperfect people, we just choose different paths in life and where our comfort zones exist. Because we're imperfect, mistakes will be made. My understanding is this: Because moderators here would like to pass along a certain representation as to what brewerfan.net is and stands for, they have rules in place. If you'd like to live within this community, it's a requirement to abide by those rules whether you agree with them or not.

If you want to rip the French, do it from your own blog or front porch. People will decide for themselves whether or not they'd like to accept that into their lives or way of thinking, or if they'd like to shun you because of your opinions. However, the rules are the rules here and I give credit to the folks that run this place for continual upkeep. There's a vision at work as to what they'd like to see here, and sometimes that means folks might have to bite their tongue or actually think before they type away.

I think it's a small sacrifice for the actual amount of entertainment and knowledge I pull from this place every day... Not just baseball, either.

Now please return to ripping Cubs fans. We all know they're crappy and worthless.

(I'll now remove myself from the soapbox. I'm okay if you agree or disagree with me. It really doesn't matter.)

It doesn't help that you wear lederhosen.

my personal oppinion is that if a thread warrants being locked because it is offensive to somebody, it is probably in your best interest to just delete the entire thread. by locking a thread, the offensive posts are still there to offend people.

and after locking a thread with offensive subject matter, you are probably going to see a related thread opened with similar offensive posts.

I don't see the point of locking a thread. it's better just to delete the entire thread.

just my oppinion.

I'll admit I wasn't a fan of locking threads compared to just deleting them at first. But everyone does a very good job of leaving a solid explination of why a thread is being locked which I really thinks helps in the long run. Outside of threads that either are, or could quickly become inflammatory, I don't think their are many cases where a thread should be deleted.

as i was reading through this thread, it seemed like it was going down the road to being locked when all the talk of mexicans and blacks and stuff came up.

would have been ironic (and entertaining) if the "locking of threads" thread was locked!
