Todd Finkelmeyer: For Brewers fans, this is one hot stove

By Todd Finkelmeyer

December 10, 2005

A couple items to ponder while thawing out in front of the fireplace:

** The Milwaukee Brewers' season opener at Miller Park is still 114 days away, so you might be surprised to learn how many people are paying close attention to this franchise - even during football season.

When news broke at about 11 p.m. Wednesday that Milwaukee traded Lyle Overbay to the Toronto Blue Jays, a thread to discuss the deal was started on a fan forum at brewerfan.net - a truly informative/entertaining Web site regarding all things Brewers.

One hour later - at midnight, in the middle of baseball's offseason - the Overbay trade thread had been clicked on nearly 3,000 times.

By 1 p.m. Thursday, more than 15,000 had viewed the thread - to either join in on the discussion or simply see what others thought about the deal that brought the Brewers right-hander Dave Bush, outfielder Gabe Gross and pitching prospect Zach Jackson.

That's an average of more than 1,000 mouse clicks per hour on that single topic over a 14-hour span.

From here, those numbers are an eye-opener.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I'm a former employee of Madison Newspapers Inc, the place is owned by Lee Enterprises. The Cap Times and the State Journal share circulation staffs, customer service, press, etc, but have seperate editorial staffs. It's a unique situation, I was in that industry for ten years, in three cities, Madison was much different than anything else I saw.
