"Acting like infants"?

I just got done writing a fairly detailed post in response to something Brian wrote in the Branyan thread, hit "add reply," and found that Brian had locked the thread because "people are acting like infants."

With all due respect, the comment was out of line. I just got through reading the post-resigning posts in that thread. A few of them were ad hominem, but even those were pretty mild, and most of what people wrote was on-topic and measured. What was the problem -- the guy who called for correct spelling of "Branyan" and the other guy who responded by misspelling it deliberately? Granted, the response was stupid, but did it really warrant shutting down discussion of the biggest Brewers news of the week (granting that the competition isn't exactly high-octane)?

I respectfully suggest that Brian -- who, for whatever my opinion is worth, generally does a great job maintaining the site's temperature -- jumped the gun and overreacted. At the very least, when a thread doesn't include blatantly obvious, harsh personal attacks or something similar, you should be more specific about which posts are bad enough to warrant shutting down discussion.

What got the thread shut down was a post I deleted where a user said something about "branyKn".

This tit-for-tat Russell Branyan stuff is something I haven't tolerated in the past, and is something I won't tolerate now. I really don't have the time to babysit the site, and if people who i've previously warned are going to keep doing what i've asked them not to, i'm going to either:

a) lock the thread

b) ban the user

Now, if I should have done B instead of A, then I apologize. I'd rather shut the thread down to allow the appropriate people to cool off then remove the user, because i'm not going to sit and waste my time finding posts to delete.

Obviously it's up to your judgment. IMHO, none of what was said (including the deleted post you refer to, which of course I didn't know about) was so bad as to warrant shutting down what was mostly a substantive and civil discussion. Having said that, I'll drop it.

[ What's wrong with BranKn? ]

Nothing in particular, but BCU has made it clear that one of his goals in life is to leave no pro-Branyan post unpunished. That's the reason for locking down the thread. People need to treat each other and situations like _adults_.

For the most part, it's happened here, but the Branyan discussion seems to bring out the worst in people.

Every Branyan thread is finally locked. Good. It's just too bad I didn't get my chance to call out Ralph Wiggum for saying I "guaranteed" he'd be gone. When did I do this Ralph?

This is your quote I took acception to:

Quote:
I'll say Branyan sucks too. His defense sucks and so does his ability (or lack there of) to hit.

"Proof" will just cause more arguements from those who seem to think stikeouts "don't matter".

360 ABs as a Brewer, 148 Ks, a meesley 23 HR and 58 RBI. Usually guy with that type of a strikeout rate can produce runs. Not this guy.

I agree that this clown has got to go.

While not a guarantee, that's a pretty strong assumption. True, I shouldn't have grouped you in with those who apparently could read Doug Melvin's mind, but you do deserve to be grouped in with the Branyan-haters. Since when is 23 HRs in 360 ABs meesely? That's right around 40 in a 600-ab year.

Strong assumption?

I still say the clown has to go. I'm not guaranteeing or assuming anything. Just stating an opinion.

Group me with the Branyan haters, fine. (since I guess I deserve that) I don't like him. Do I have a right to dislike any certain player for whatever reason I want? Yes, it's my opinion. I'm not prophecising or guaranteeing anything. I'm not Nostradamus.

I never called out all of the Cirillo haters when he made the team last year. But, I know, some still don't seem to be over that yet.

Just because he signed a NON-guaranteed contract doesn't mean jack anyways. So before you get too excited about this "signing" why don't you wait and see how thing go in spring training.

Branyan can't stay healthy enough to get 600 ABs. Maybe I should have just compared the HR/K ratio. If you saying he can hit 40 HRs, I'll say he can K 300 times.

What? I never said anything about Jenkins. I'm one who'd like to see him in a Brewer uniform for a long time. If anything, I stood up for him while he struggled in the early part of the season. I never jumped on the "Trade Jenkins" bandwagon.

Edit: Who will be next to put words in my mouth?

congrats Brian. I think the Branyan cease-fire could really help calm down the site a bit. And to the person who said the Ginter arguments were fiercer, I cannot agree. I'm pretty sure we all liked Ginter. Some felt he was a starter. Some felt his potential was rotting away on the bench. Some felt he was solid as a PH/super-sub. But the Branyan issue is much more volatile. I mean, people are being foolish enough to call out others who said he'd be cut. Gee, the Journal Sentinal, mlb.com, and other sources all said he was unlikely to be tendered a contract. I'll admit I expected (and stated so) him to be cut, but due to a numbers issue rather than a talent issue. Perhaps we need another "I told you so" thread, as I think it was kind of therapeutic last June or so.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there have been a lot of posters who just post to tear others down. For me, it has taken a lot of fun out of posting on this site, when I constantly run into others being jerks toward one another.

Not saying I've never gotten upset and let that come through my posts, but I would love it if this were cleaned up a bit. I think we all know who the culprits generally are. Maybe a harsh warning could be extended to such individuals. If everyone cleaned up their act this place would be 10x as fun.

There would be vociferous debate with virtually any comment made in any thread. For instance, I could comment that Cinderella wears a blue dress, and there would be debate about what she wears at night, the shade of blue, what she wore before she was a princess, how she looks to a color-blind person, what she wears at Disneyworld Tokyo, if Branyan would have looked good in the blue dress, what she might wear for her wedding, and if the Taliban would have forced her to dress otherwise, which would have caromed off to a lengthy political debate with name-calling, etc.

Anyway, we're not acting like infants, since few of them actually type.

I think we should lock this thread and be done with it.
