Counsell’s Contract

Gotta believe the team has broached the discussion and that the team wants him to take a 3-4 year deal. The hold up, as I read between the lines, is that CC doesn’t know if he wants to continue or not. The article mentions his kids playing a role in this too and if Craig wants to transition. Overall, both parties do not seem concerned about the matter, but my guess is that Counsell doesn’t want to commit to anything beyond this year.
Might it be possible that the 2022 season turned both Stearns and Counsell so much that both do not want to be a part of this team long term? Both a general manager saying no mas to this year and a manager not looking for an extension before his last year begins are odd things to say the least.

Check out this article from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Brewers manager Craig Counsell's contract is on management's agenda but talks likely won't seriously pick up until late summer

I think this is a non-issue.  Counsell seems pretty well settled it, he's from the area, been a fan since being a child . . . I just don't see him out-and-quitting here while our playoff window is still open.  And I don't see it happening once that window shuts and a rebuild/retool starts.

I could be way off, of course.

My guess is he will manage the Brewers until he decides to call it quits or the Brewers finish with five consecutive 100-loss seasons and the team has no choice but to can him.

I would agree with you BEFORE I read the article.

Reading between the lines the obvious seems to be:

Thinking about spending more time with family and would probably do that if after the year the team gets nuked and is in some kind of transition/rebuild.

The guy would want to win a WS with the Brewers as much as any of us…but sacrificing family time with the unknown after this core of players dissolves is probably not attractive.

Maybe CC is trying to leverage his own weight by, in essence, threatening to leave if some good players (Woodruff, Adames?) are not kept or extended.  If we pull another Hader-type midseason trade... like trading Burnes at the deadline for a #4 pitcher and prospects, I think he's saying I don't want to be a part of this.  I'm tending to believe more of this line of thinking.  It's probably why Stearns left too.
