He dropped a hint a few weeks ago. Good catch, @Mass Haas!

Ashby seemingly a lock to start the season in the pen. 6-man rotation of Burnes, Woodruff, Freddy, Lauer, Houser, Miley to start the season.

Jeez, he seems destined for an entire season of basically pen work at that rate.

I think Ashby's a bit up in the air until the "fatigue" is figured out. He could very well have an "extended spring training" run depending on how long he'll have to wait to start throwing a normal routine. Or, he could hit the Arizona sun, get some throwing in and feel fine.

I do think that Houser could end up in the 'pen with a five-man rotation rather than giving him some of Burnes' and Woodruff's starts. Every start the sixth starter gets is taken away from someone else. When that someone else is a Cy Young candidate, don't use the sixth starter.

Of course, we're not even to Spring Training, and one of our seven starters is having problems, so a lot could happen between now and opening day.

Just goes to show, you can never have too much starting pitching.

This.

I chuckle when fans (not necessarily Brewers fans) gleefully write that their team can trade a starting pitcher or two because they have a surplus. Pitchers get injured so often these days you need 7 or more quality starters to get through a season (assuming you have playoff aspirations).

Should have traded him while we could! /Sarcasm?

Let's hope that Ashby's 24-year old shoulder just needs some rest and he'll ultimately break camp as part of the 26-man squad when we destroy the Cubs on March 30th.

Relatedly, maybe this will spur us to pull the trigger on that Will Smith (or another competent LH reliever) contract.

After not bothering to pick up someone like Kyle Nelson before the 2022 season, I've been a bit disappointed that we've also not picked up any of the inexpensive, optionable LH relievers recently available (e.g. Anthony Misiewicz, Matt Gage, Tayler Saucedo, Darwinzon Hernandez, Zach Logue).

Hopefully, this is it for injuries on our pitching staff. We were kind of hoping for better luck on that front than last year. Though, adding Miley obviously helps.

Im interested in the timeline, obviously this isn't great anyway you slice but if you take "a couple of months" literally then we are looking at mid April which isn't awful
