Design your own message board

3. I'd really like to see an area that has links to newspapers from accross the league. Maybe that's something I could help out with right now.

Take a look at prosportsdaily.com. The pop up ads are annoying, but they do a great jub of sorting newspaper stories by team.

One other feature that I like about BigSoccer.com is that the moderators can "Yellow" and "Red Card" a poster for breaking the rules. "Yellow" is the first warning. "Red" means they can not post for a certain number of days (if ever).

A cash feature where you would get say $1 per post. Then if you get say $3,000 you could exchange it for a brewerfan t-shirt or something like that. You could also exchange the cash for the ability to use a signature, get an avatar, post in certain areas. Just an idea http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I'm not a fan of that one. The number of useless posts would skyrocket.... plus, I don't have the money to dole out for t-shirts http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Believe me, I help mod a site that has a "fake cash" feature that's used for this and that, and the amount of useless post padding crap we deal with is pretty bad.

I know that Brian already said "no" on that one, but I'd have to add another (and emphatic) BAD IDEA here.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of post counts altogether. They are pretty much useless.

And I'd like to at this time officially submit the idea that Lemurs play some sort of a role in the features.

I think the yellow card idea would be nice. It gets the point across without having to "craft" a writen response. I think it would help to keep some of the ugly admin work out of the posting threads.

I think the true benefit would be taking the base functionality that you get in a Major League or Minor League type threads and extending it to create customized experiences for things like the Game Threads and The Daily Link Reports.

I think with some thought you could use the basic framework and create a Gamecast like experience where users could visually see two distinct threads...play by play and commentary for any particular game.

With some deft portlet'esqe design...users could even watch all six "gamecasts" on one page and jump in to comment on the hot game of the night.

Ah yes. That trash known as sports-boards.net. The Brewers discussion there - or lack therein - is downright disgusting.

Plus that site is overrun by Philly and Eagle and Detroit Pistons fans anyways. Who in their right mind would deal with them?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/sick.gif

This forum is being used by some people who decided to defect from the ESPN boards (sort of like we did, initially). If checked it out from time to time, and it's not bad conversation, just not much of it.

I actually saw a thread where some of them were planning to try and lure Brewerfan posters to their site http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . I know there's a couple of Brewerfan posters who cross-post there, and they're decent guys.

But yeah, I think that fake cash thing is pretty hoky http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I find that pretty hilarious, actually... but yes, the ones from here that post there are good guys and knowledgable about baseball.

My guess is that they post there for mindless jabber and here for somewhat intelligent baseball talkhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Please add a "Team History" section to the Fan Forum. I see a lot of posts discussing favorite players from bygone eras, favorite Opening Days, all-time team leaders, etc. Those are great, but it's really something different from the Major League forum.

I'd like to see the work "pissed" added to the curse filter. I'm sorry if it's a petty thought, but it seems to me that fans of this respected site could better express themselves than use such an ignorant term.

Here's something to chew on.

ezBoard is the only message board I know of that bumps a thread to the top for every little edit.

Maybe people view that as desirable. I'm not sure myself, but I think I'd prefer that a new board format not do that.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I just utilized a cool feature on Fan Zone Central.

When you edit a post, it asks the user to put in a reason.

Is it possible to do "merged threads", where a mod can merge posts from seperate threads that are on virtually the same topic? This would seem to help clean up clutter. A good example of threads that could be merged is the couple steroids ones currently on the first page of threads.

Also, being able to have a bigger archive would be nice. Don't know how that could be accomplished, though, as I'm not very up on these sorts of things. As long as the new board allows be to write long posts unlike now with the stupid EzBoard problem I'm still having.

Not as it stands now with EZBoard, unfortunately. However, in this dream world where i'm writing my own message board software, would it simply shuffle together the posts into one thread sorted by time posted?

There's no limit to the number of forums we can have, so we can archive everything, as far as I know (as long as someone wants to takes the time to move all the threads).

Are you saying that the rest of us are able to post longer messages than you can? Have you tried copying and pasting from a word processor or text editor?

I'd love to see something like that. Often, duplicate threads start with very good posts.

Reading-wise, it'd probably be a little more complicated when long threads are merged, but it'd sure work when a short thread is quickly locked.

Yes. I usually have to edit my posts multiple times until I reach the limit of space I can take up, usually a couple of paragraphs.

Apparently several people have had this problem:

It might be nice to not only mark the new threads, but also new posts within a thread, so you can just go to the bottom and look for the first new one, instead of scrolling up until you see something you remember.

I'm starting to develop this now. I'll be putting together a roadmap shortly which will outline all the features i'm planning to develop and in what order they will be developed. I probably won't make this live for quite a while (my guess is Q1 2007), but I may be reaching out and asking for beta testers to work out the kinks. I'm planning on making this a generic product that can be re-used by other organizations, so I want to take my time.

A popup menu or link allowing the member to "view only my posts in this thread" could be useful. I'd use it as a quick way to avoid repetition.
