Article: Looking At The Potential Of Robert Gasser

This new pitching prospect shows a lot of promise as he makes his Double-A debut…

In a somewhat shocking turn of events, that I’m sure everyone is well aware of now, Brewers closer Josh Hader has been traded to the San Diego Padres for LHP Taylor Rogers, RHP Dinelson Lamet, 2B Esteury Ruiz and LHP Robert Gasser.

The move surprised many and reactions were mixed.

Regardless, one player in particular may turn out to be a future ace for the Brewers and could be the reason as to why this move was even made in the first place.

Robert Gasser is a left-handed pitcher, drafted by San Diego 71st overall in 2021.

He spent one game in rookie ball where he pitched one scoreless inning before being promoted to Single-A Lake Elsinore. While in Single-A, he pitched 14 innings and maintained a low 1.29 ERA in 5 starts. He struck out 13 batters and walked 2.

Gasser struggled this year in High-A Fort Wayne. His ERA went up to a rather poor 4.18 in 90.1 innings pitched. However, he struck out 115 batters and walked 25.

Looking at his pitching repertoire, Gasser throws an interesting running fastball. Thanks to San Diego’s pitching development staff, his fastball velocity has increased from the upper 80s to the low-to-mid 90s in only a season. His slider shows a lot of promise as well, with a velocity near the low 80s. His changeup has also been extremely effective for him.

Gasser has a lot of stuff. He has great command over the ball and could very easily develop into an effective starter for Milwaukee in a few years.

David Stearns likes this prospect for a reason. It may not seem like it at the moment, but this trade will pan out well for the Brewers in the long run.
