Is it really that interesting? Mitchell was invited to big league camp last season despite never touching AAA.

Why the invite, if the OF is so set with Winker-Yelich-Mitchell-Taylor? Methinks that Frelick and Wiemer will get a look in spring training.

Why is Gasser at big league camp when the Brewers already have 7 MLB SP? Top prospects in AAA pretty much always get invited to big league camp. If a prospect has a reasonable chance of being on the MLB roster at some point in the season they will almost always be invited to big league camp.

Hmm, I thought Chourio would get a look.

I thought he had a chance but felt it was 50/50 either way. I’m still not sold that he will start in AA. He was good in A+ but wasn’t dominant like he was in A ball. If the AA season didn’t run a week longer than the A+ season, I don’t think Chourio would have been in AA last season.

I think he starts in AA because the weather is far better in Biloxi than it will be in Appleton.  If he struggles in Biloxi early then you move him back down if not then he stays.

For reference/perspective, here are the 19 NRI's that came to camp in 2022 (https://www.ballysports.com/wisconsin/news/2022-milwaukee-brewers-non-roster-spring-training-capsules) along with their time spent on the big league club last year:

  • Pitchers: Jason Alexander (71.2 IP), Luke Barker (4 IP), Rex Brothers (0 IP), Moises Gomez (0 IP), Hobie Harris (0 IP), Trevor Kelley (23.2 IP), Josh Lindblom (0 IP), Luis Perdomo (23.2 IP), Connor Sadzeck (3 IP), Ethan Small (6.1 IP)
  • Catchers: Jakson Reetz (0 PAs)
  • Infielders: Mark Mathias (17 PAs), Andruw Monasterio (0 PAs), Brice Turang (0 PAs), Tyler White (0 PAs)
  • Outfielders: Abraham Almonte (0 PAs), David Dahl (0 PAs), Jonathan Davis (91 PAs), Garrett Whitley (0 PAs)

I wouldn't read into any specific player coming into camp too much. It's usually a good chance for the coaching staff to get a feel for guys that may come up later in the year or possibly grab the last spot on the roster, but rarely are they players looking to win starting jobs.

That said, while Frelick may be a special case this year, I'd venture to guess Wiemer falls more into the "let's give this guy a closer look" category because he's got a shot to get the call later on in the year.

Well both certainly have a chance to make the MLB roster at some point in 2023.

A lot of this is just good gesture though. I mean, 1st round prospects used to require in their contract to be on the MLB squad for part of their first spring training.

Both Frelick and Wiemer made MLB Pipeline's Top 100. I Agree Frelick could be more likely, but Wiemer's not out of the running by any stretch, IMO.

I'm friends with Robert Stock's little brother who used to play minor league ball. Here's some original reporting. Robert is gonna be stretched out for starting/long man/multi inning use. He has an opt out during the season but my friend doesn't know when exactly. He's invited to big league camp. Robert is also playing for Israel in the WBC.

Pretty sure both Hiura and Mitchell has been non-roster invites every year they've been with the organization. It's meant nothing for their chances to make the opening day roster as neither ever did.

Don't overthink the invites.  Bringing in your high end MiLB players into MLB camp is a common development move.  The future rookies get to know the MLB players, coaches, and the expectations of both.  They start to get a taste of the bigs as a motivation for the future and a reward for past progress.  This is a simple development move for our top end talent.

Yes, each has a decent chance of making the MLB roster at some point this year, but they don't have to break camp on the 26-man roster for this to be a smart development activity by the club.

I wonder if Singleton had requested the release to seek another offer but the Brewers left the door open.

Also, not at all surprised by Quero. Given the number of catchers they typically have in spring training, I was more shocked he didn't get the initial invite than Chourio.
