Opening Day 26-man roster projections

There are so many of you on this website that are far more knowledgeable of Brewers baseball than me. I’m interested in seeing your projections for our Opening Day roster.

is it possible to have 14 position players? Is there a minimum # of pitchers?

I love the addition of Anderson. I’m wondering what rookies join Mitchell on the 26-man roster.

Please reply with your best guess of the OD roster. Let’s assume no injuries & no more additions.

My best guess at this moment

C: Contreras, Caritini

IF: Rowdy, Urias, Adames, Anderson, Brosseau, Hiura

OF: Yelich, Frelick, Taylor, Mitchell, Winker

SP: Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Miley

RP: Williams, Bush, Strezlecki, Milner, Ashby, Houser, Guerra, Payamps

The last few bullpen pieces really could be anyone.

For position players 12 seem locked in, that last spot I took Frelick, I think there is a good chance they start him right away with the new ROY incentives. Other options could be Toro, Miller, Singleton, Perkins or Turang and none of them would really surprise me

I think this makes the most sense based on what we know today, but they would be eating Hiura’s 2.2 million salary. It’s not a ton but it’s not insignificant.

My list is similar.  My variations:

I think Brosseau's got a better shot than Toro.

Perkins has yet to see a regular season MLB active roster.  I don't think his first time is Opening Day.  Unless they move him or he's an absolute wreck in ST, I think Hiura is a near-lock for the Opening Day roster.

I'm intrigued by Varland, but I don't think he has a snowball's chance of making the OD roster over Matt Bush.

I also see both Miley & Houser on the OD roster, but they didn't sign Miley to a $5M contract to be a long man out of the BP.  Houser's been inconsistent enough that I think he's in that role.

.... Like someone else noted above, barring injuries, I wouldn't be surprised if an IF is moved before Opening Day, as well as one SP-type (Houser?).

C-Contreras

1B-Tellez

2B-Urias

3B-Anderson

SS-Adames

LF-Yelich

CF-Mitchell

RF-Taylor

DH-Winker

Bench C-Caratini, 1B-Hiura, INF-Toro, INF-Brosseau

Rotation Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Ashby, Lauer

Bullpen Williams, Bush, Milner, Payamps, Guerra, Miley, Houser, Wilson

Having Anderson and Winker takes the pressure off of having to have an exclusive 4th outfielder on the bench. Don't get me wrong I don't want Winker in the field but in case of emergency he can do it. I just don't see how Hiura fits on the team, with zero options and his heavy reverse splits he is pretty redundant when Tellez and Winker are on the club. I admit the bullpen looks funky with 3 guys that could potentially start but with Strezelecki and Cousins having options I think they are going to keep the guys with zero options until they either prove they can't cut it or until the inevitable injuries strike.

vs. RHP                               vs. LHP

Yelich-LF                            Yelich-LF

Adames-SS                        Urias-2B

Tellez-1B                             Adames-SS

Contreras-C                       Contreras-DH

Winker-DH                         Brosseau-1B

Urias-2B                             Anderson-3B

Mitchell-RF                        Taylor-RF

Anderson-3B                     Caratini-C

Frelick-CF                           Frelick-CF

Unless he's traded, which is still a distinct possibility, Hiura is going to be on the OD roster. They're going to give his bat one last chance to live up to the hype. He's a terrible fit defensively and split-wise for this roster, though.

They'll also work to preserve the depth they've accumulated this offseason by stashing guys with options remaining in AAA (Miller, Toro, Junk), while keeping guys without options on the MLB roster (Hiura, Taylor).

I think Frelick pulls a Steven Kwan and hits the lights out in Spring Training to earn him a starting OF slot. Brewers give in despite the service time ramifications due to the possibility that they could receive draft pick compensation.

Miley wont be in the bullpen... He signed here to be a starter.

I think Turang is the big X factor. He probably needs to prove he’s a better defensive second baseman than Urias to make the Opening Day roster:

C - Contreras, Caratini
IF - Adames, Tellez, Urias, Anderson, Brosseau, Hiura, Toro
OF - Yelich, Mitchell, Taylor, Winker
SP - Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Miley, Houser
RP - Williams, Bush, Ashby, Strzelecki, Milner, Guerra, Varland

Wouldn't be too surprising to see Huira shopped in ST if there are injuries on other teams.  Of course...we might have injuries too.

Don’t trade away anyone unless they are planning to DFA him anyway

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

No, 2.2 million dollars in ‘23 is insignificant. Brian Anderson was DFA’d by the tightfisted Marlins and got 3.5 million by that measure Hiura is a bargain.

That was kind of the point of saying it could happen in ST.  We have too many players on the 40-man that don't have options so something has to give.  If Huira hasn't distinguished himself from the crowd and someone comes knocking for depth and/or backup and/or a reclamation project, I'd guess we would trade him just to save the $2.2M.
