Musings from the Recliner.....The State of Our Brewers Today !

 Share

  • After Fridays signings the Brewers have 18 players under contract for 2023 at $ 90,384,960.00
  • If we take the high end arby offer to Corbin Burnes that piushes it to 19 players at $101,134,960.00
  • Last years was 133 mill give or take leaves 29 mill or so in play if Mark wants to hold the line on spending.
  • Question : Is the Burnes semi stalemate an attempt to keep negotiations open for a longer term deal ? Many on these pages think so. What say you ?
  • Singing Wade Miley to a one year deal to be your 4th or 5th starter makes me believe another trade may be in the offing.
  • Lauer ( because he is young and as has excellent trade value) along with Houser and/or Huira and/or Taylor could be on the move.
  • its no secret the Brewers would like a right handed bat for OF or a young 3rd Baseman to add to roster.
  • Huira's signing signals two things 1-They have established a cost if they can find a trade partner and 2-Since he has no options left they will not DFA him.
  • If thats the case we may see him on the roster as IB-2B-DH-OF backup. The Brewers are not ready to cut bait with a former 1st Round Pick.
  • I believe its 100% Mitchell and Turang break camp for opening day, its 50% on Frelick and 20% on Weimer
  • Of the remaining free agents none are really attractive and fit the Brewers plans.
  • My top trade targets are probably still Yandy Diaz and Eduardo Escobar. Who would be your preferred choices?
  • Pitchers and Catchers report in 31 days........we got a lot of work to do

I think the Brewers go with some relievers depending on what happens with Burnes.  If it goes to arbitration lets just call it $11m for Burnes to round up.

So about $18m left to sign a reliever or two.

Sign:

Rosenthal 1-year $2m, Chapman 1-year $6m and Chafin 1-year $6m

That gives the Brewers a nice bullpen but with some question marks in Rosenthal and Chapman.  If the Brewers could get Chapman on a deal at less than $10m I think they will go for it.  This also gives Counsel some options to use Williams earlier and then use Rosenthal or Chapman as a closer for some games when Williams is not available.  You could also switch Chapman with Britton if you are uncomfortable with Chapman but I think Britton gets more than Chapman so you are looking at the $8-10m range for Britton.

If Kimbrel got 1/10, I think Aroldis will get a that as well. Pesrsonally I like Matt Moore as a pen option best. I thought he would be a 3/24-30 type reliever but if we could get 2/12 with a option that would be great. I like Moore because he can be a setup type or also come in during the 5th and throw a couple innings. Also we really need another reasonable lefty and most of the options have some concerning question marks.

With the signing of Anderson I would say there is a smaller chance Turang breaks camp (like 25). 1 OF prospect will and it will almost assured that it will be Mitchell since he is on the 40 man already.

My guess is we don't do any moves until camp. When other teams have a significant injury at P or 2B/3B (maybe even OF) we will be sitting there to make a sweet deal. I would be ok trading 2 or even 3 of Huira/Miller/Brosseau/Toro now that Anderson is on the fold.
