Wow, wow, wow! Now THIS is the type of needle moving signing I have wanted to see. Mark A really stretching that payroll! ?

3.50 ERA 4.12 FIP 4.33 xFIP since the Brewers resurrected his career in 2018. Solid SP at a decent price. This is a good move.

Yep last year was a painful reminder that you can never have too much pitching. Compared to what Suter would have made if we retained him one more year the little bit extra mostly as incentives definitely looks like a very solid value play.

I like this signing.  I think the Brewers are better off signing starting pitchers and moving Ashby and Houser into relief roles with occasional starts rather than signing bullpen reclamation projects.  For $5 million the Brewers solidified the starting pitching rotation and added two arms to the bullpen.  Good deal!

I will be shocked if Ashby isn't in our rotation on opening day.  I think they will limit his innings this year for certain, but he is going to be a starter, and not a bullpen guy.  He'll be stretched out as a starter from day one imo.

Houser is the guy that needs to go to the bullpen.  He has had success in the role in the past, and it seems to me that he is best in that role.

I just hope they don't mess with Ashby bouncing back and forth in any way in 2023.  Let the kid do what he does.

What is your starting five?

1  Corbin Burnes

2  Brandon Woodruff

3  Freddy Peralta

4  Eric Lauer

5  Wade Miley

I think it's very possible they go with a 6 man rotation similar to what they did in 2021

Also think it's certainly possible they use Houser purely as a reliever this year, can deploy him in specific situations that way considering his lack of effectiveness against lefties

I love this, it allows us to do a lot. This allows us to have a ton of options, we can trade Lauer or Houser if a good deal comes along, put Ashby in the pen and possible stretch him out if/when someone goes on the dl. If Ashby has a really good spring you could even put Miley in the long relief and Ashby in the rotation.

At 3.5 million there isn't a  huge risk for a solid vet if they can stay healthy. The 2nd year option is decent if he does have a great year.

They did the six man rotation in ‘21 because they wanted to limit innings after the short ‘20 season.

Doing a six man rotation now takes starts away from Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta and gives them to lesser pitchers.

So are you saying they are going to put Houser and Ashby in the pen or is a trade coming?

I haven't looked at the schedule but we should be able to start at with a 5 man rotation (1st 2 times round) and maybe go back to it a couple times throughout the year when we have a couple days of in a week.

With Miley on board I am thinking Lauer becomes the most likely to be traded. Miley gives us a lefty or two with Ashby in the rotation and with the prices 3/4 starters have been getting he should have good value.

Not sure we need to know the answer to that right now. Plenty of time until opening day. What this does is gives us lots of options as we continue to configure a ball club for 2023. Maybe we start the season with 8 starting pitchers on the roster. Maybe we trade one or two of them in the next 3 months. I would wager that Matt + crew don't know that yet.

We have options now that we didn't have at this time yesterday and for the price, I think Matt did well here. Great problem to fall into.

Ashby to the pen. Here's what he did in 2022: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=ashbyaa01&year=2022&t=p

 Reliever 0 2 .000 2.79 8 0 2 0 0 1 19.1 19 6 6 0 6 0 23 2 0 1 82 1.293 10.7 3.83

And in 2021: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=ashbyaa01&year=2021&t=p

as Reliever 2 2 .500 4.50 9 0 3 0 0 1 20.0 13 11 10 3 8 0 30 1 0 0 81 1.050 13.5 3.75

So, I think, if the Crew wants to win in 2023, Ashby to the pen is a good move. Use him as a long man to keep him stretched out, just in case.

Not saying anything other than a six man rotation would cost Burnes, Woodruff, and Peralta about five starts each. That doesn’t seem like an optimal solution.

I don’t care how you position the pitching staff beyond Burnes, Woodruff, and Peralta, but those three need to start as much as possible.
