Brewers acquire Bryse Wilson

Is it really "depth" if it's trash?

Brewers obviously saw something in Wilson that they want to have a look at developing in their Pitching Lab. On the surface, it appears that there's more to work with here than with Alexander or Kelley. Brewers also have a much better track record at developing pitchers than the Pirates. If it doesn't work out, they can always cut ties with him for virtually no cost and at no impact to their ability to make other moves. All teams, including the Dodgers, Rays, etc. engage in this sort of depth building and end-of-roster shuffling.

Dumpster diving seems to be the 2022/23 offseason theme.

I find it hard to believe, but the Brewers seem to have identified the new undervalued resource as pitchers who have ERAs over 5. I'd rather have this guy than Kelley.

sometimes if you polish a turd, it becomes a bright shiny turd that can give you a couple years of decent (or even excellent) production. All of these guys they have been acquiring have something going for them, in spite of crappy performance. And they don't have a ton invested in them, so they can cut bait and move on.

Yes, depth at the bottom of the roster is throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.  Some sticks, some falls.  ST will sort out some of it (not just results, but coaching working with guys) and some will work out in the minors.  Some will be cut and some will spend the year in AAA.  Be a fan of any other team...and you will find the same thing happening.

Hmmm so would be 8 guys for 5 spots...

Burnes/Woody/Peralta/Lauer/Ashby/Houser/Miley/Wilson, something's gotta give here.

Key word there is "compete". Obviously Woodruff, Burnes and Peralta are assured spots, and I have to imagine Lauer is a lock as well. Doubt Miley is going to be pitching out of the pen, so he's probably a lock as well. If they go with a 6-man rotation, which seems likely at this point, that leaves Ashby, Houser and Wilson in competition for that role, with the two losers likely going to the pen. Not such a bad problem to have.

I'm competing for a spot in the starting rotation this spring too...  I'm a dark horse candidate as I don't have a contract and can't even get anyone to return my calls...but I'm a candidate.

I suppose you bring in 10 guys in case of injury, but I'd say he is an 99.99% chance of being a BP guy. Not quite as long as a shot at starting as me... but closer odds to me than Burnes. ?

There's a better plan:

  • Secretly rediscover his old fastball and turn him into an amazing pitcher
  • Have him purposely get shelled during his first three Spring Training outings, so that he can be DFA'd, not claimed, outrighted and commence the season at AAA Nashville
  • Select his contract when he proves how awesome he is in Nashville, pre-agreeing an opt-out date for him

So will Wilson be the one dumped to add Miley? I'd chuckle if that happens.

Well, there are not a whole lot of other players who make sense... Jason Alexander, Tyson Miller, Jon Singleton... Payamps? Peguero?

The Orioles just did exactly this with 1B Ryan O’Hearn: traded cash to pluck him from the Royals’ DFA limbo, then DFA’d him 2 days later.

So it’s likely a function of how much cash you’ve paid. Teams probably have some rules of thumb - e.g. if acquiring for $10k or less, then no biggie to DFA a few days later, hope nobody claims, then outright to AAA.

Who would throw perfectly good spaghetti at the wall? Anyone who throws any tomato product against the wall is a psychopath!  :-)

The Brewers pitching lab isn't so much as improving the pitcher but adjusting the quantity of which pitches they use.  Seems typically to be working on 1 of the breaking ball pitches and throw that pitch more often signaling it as their best pitch.  The quote on Twitter mentions a splitter. I think a number of our pitchers have worked on change ups. Combine with fastball he may find a 3 pitch mix that just improves how effective he is.

Looking at his Fangraphs pitch mix, he went FB(sinker), Slider, Curveball, and Change-up.  Move to velocity on the pitches and his FB has lost 2MPH while changeup less than 1MPH.  Not surprising his changeup value was his worst valued pitch. Wilson did have his best season in GB%.

That said not all is rosy for Wilson. For his career he's not had 1 pitch value reach a 1+value. Definitely had all pitches he threw -1+ value with FB -6+ and the Changeup -7+.  Sorta a troubling sign when you think about maybe relief pitcher he'd become effective using 2 pitches and getting 3 outs.

So he's a project. Say the FB velocity improves, the changeup velocity reduces, and his new pitch is avg he turns in to a better Jason Alexander. Maybe they dump his Slider or curveball. He did toss 18Innings vs Milw giving up 8 runs on 4 different games, and his last start of 22 was an 8IP shutout.

At this moment he's probably more likely to be waived and traded than pitching Milw games.
