I'm not that concerned with last season...we're seldom signing guys coming off monster seasons as the get...monster deals.

But he's got reverse splits. They're not great vs lefties.

It's picking nits a bit but over his career, Mancini doesn't really have platoon splits. He was bad against LHP in 2022 and great against LHP in 2021. In 2020, he didn't really have platoon splits.

Which doesn't necessarily have change your opinion of him; I think it makes the case he's somewhat unreliable if your priority is to acquire a lefty masher.

I didn't say we were worse overall. He said we'd made three BIG trades. Well, two of them were to improve the team, one was to dump salary.  And that trade didn't change the "mediocre bullpen and one of the softest tossing groups in the league." We took back 3 relievers, none of whom are even close to being locks to make our OD roster. So that hasn't improved as a result of the Renfroe trade. We could have traded Burnes, Woodruff and Adames and that'd be 6 big trades. Big trade doesn't necessarily mean it's a trade that makes us BETTER this year.

And we DID get back a player who helps us vs lefties. Contreras was VERY good last year.

As bad as we were last year vs lefties, the goal should have been to add more than one player to rectify that problem. Especially when that one player will ALMOST certainly not come close to replicating his splits from a year ago and who only played ~100 games.

I'd like to think we're not going to hang our hopes on being able to hit LHPing on a guy who's got ~150 PAs in his career vs lefties.

So the justification for not spending being we've done these things and we've saved 10M...so I'd hope that 10M would be put back into the team, not just used to save salary.

I don't think it was a salary dump. It was trading someone with one year of control for multiple players with something like 17 years of control combined. That trade didn't even necessarily make our team worse on it's own next season. If one of our young outfielders produces near league average and one or more of those relievers gives us league average production we pretty much break even next year. Saving the money was a bonus but how, or when, we spend it doesn't make it THE reason we traded him. It's simply a smart way to keep our team competitive year in and year out.

I don't care if they spend a dime on free agents this off season. At this point I think we have a better team than we had last year and have plenty of money to trade for anyone we want at the deadline. With a lot of young players on the roster I think it makes more sense to have room for a mid season trade than spend it now. When July comes around we'll have a better idea where we need to improve.

That trade clearly made our team better. He was the one player who had an OPS over ~740 vs lefties and his OPS vs lefties was over .840.

And we got back...3 pitchers who, again, probably won't make the opening day roster.

You think that made the Brewers better and then 10M savings was an ancillary bonus?

I'd disagree.

Are you saying that you don't think a team would give us any value for Burnes or Woodruff next offseason? I disagree.

Every team in baseball would love to have either of those guys in their rotation, and will be willing to pay far more than the value of a compensatory draft pick for one year of their service. Not trading them next offseason would severely harm the future of the franchise.

That’s part of it. The other part is the blowback this team would get by trading them when they very likely will contend all year at worst and be a playoff team this season at best.

Teams hoard their best prospects during the offseason because they can improve with FA’s. That changes at the trade-deadline when there aren’t FA’s to buy, and teams desperation-levels rise.

With that said I just don’t see the team trading the big 3. I see them making a run both this season and next, with them leading the way.

It’s been too quiet, even for our typical quiet standards. Something is afoot, be it a big trade or extension(s). IMO

The Mariners have also spent $0 and have a smart FO that has a lot in common with the Brewers. It's not surprising that they have become frequent trade partners. Brewers fans are handling the offseason much better than Mariners fans, but in the end I think we're going to be happy we sat this one out.

Segura has been nothing if not consistent, but I think we're better off hoping that Toro fills that roster spot.

I would think Segura wouldn't entertain any talk playing for the Brewers.  Dark time surrounding his final season here. Imagine waking up and going to work at a place that brings you back to that time.  Miami is not surprisingly far away from Milw.

100% agree with this take.  I thought the exact same thing when his name came up here.  I just don't think he cares to re-live those times.
