Trading Wiemer or Mitchell for a Pitcher

 Share

I've only seen 2nd hand reporting (originally an article by Rosenthal in the Athletic), but apparently there is talk of trading one of Wiemer or Mitchell (plus more) for a starter.

I think that's a bad idea. I would try to get some retread on a minor league contract with a ST invite.

I'd agree at this point. The nice thing about having Mitchell/Frelick/Wiemer/Chourio/Avina is the fact that post-2024, they will be cheap while the Crew could extend Burnes/Woodruff/Adames. If they can't extend Burnes, make the trade around him and get some pitching help, otherwise, it needs to be a bigger steal that Contreras and two pitchers for Esteury Ruiz.

I'm alright with trading Mitchell if it's the right trade, but I don't see the need right now. Maybe they're looking at trading for a younger pitcher and...there are a ton I'd trade our young OFers for.

It just seems strange that WE'RE pursuing this or pushing for this trade. Which is why...unless you specifically saw it was for a starting pitcher, I'm thinking it could just be for a high end reliever.

Not that I think the bullpen is in a bad shape...in fact, it seems like often times the best bullpens come together almost on accident. I think about Andrew Miller going from top prospect as a SPer to kinda failing and then developing into the prototype for Josh Hader or the Brewers dominant BP that had Burnes, Woodruff, Jeffress who was in and out, Knebel who turned it on in '17 and then struggled for a prolonged stretch in '18(not to mention, Taylor Williams was a dominant 1st half reliever that year before falling off a cliff which prompted in part the promotions of our young starters.

Still, it never hurts to add a dominant late inning reliever.
