The Padres are insane, sports in general are insane.  The owner is going to take a hit in the pocketbook on this one.  No way does he make $250 million next year to make pay roll for this team.  Reminds me of the Angels of the early 2000's.  That organization has gone through two or three ownership groups since.  What happens when Machado, Soto, Snell, Hader, and Darvish become free agents in the two years.

What is happening to sports in general?  Contracts paying upwards of $50 million per year.  I couldn't possibly make this much money in my career.   No wonder why sports betting is allowed.  Just be care what you wish for sports leagues.  Someday is coming.

At the end of the day, I'd rather see the money go to the players than the owners. It reflects society in general -- those at the top are massively successful right now. Sports leagues are far from the only entity with record revenue and profits these days.

The Padres are of course being dumb, but it's not like they are the only ones driving up the price of FAs.

The smart way to play in this market is to buy out free agency with incentive-laden contracts the second your stars hit the major leagues.

At the same point in their career, Turner had a career 119 wRC+ while Adames has a 111 wRC+. Turner had a career 18.6 fWAR 18.3 bWAR while Adames has a 13.7 fWAR and 15.5 bWAR. It's the 2 near 7 WAR seasons Turner put up his last 2 seasons that will determine where Adames' FA contract lands. I think he has some of those seasons coming, so it's better to lock him in now than trying to after they arrive.

The Atlanta Braves are building another dynasty doing just that.

Anyway, as for the money...go back and read about the comments when players started making a million a year. Reggie White's contract was for...I THINK like 4/16M and it was a massive deal. Like the Aaron Judge of this off-season?

And now Aaron Donald 30 years later has a 3/95M dollar guaranteed contract.

With regard to Baseball players, they're underpaid if anything. Not Judge, Turner and the guys getting these 11 year deals, but on balance. NBA and NFL, they get ~50% of the revenue as mandated by their CBAs.

MLB has gotten down to 38% in recent years.

Yeah, it's obscene...and it'll continue as long as people obsess over it and watch it on TV...and legal sports betting sure hasn't hurt in that regard. The only reason it bothers me is because it kinda screws over my team. I'm fine with it in the NFL where my team doesn't have an owner and almost can't lose money in a season or the NBA where we have 3 billionaire owners and a salary cap.

Otherwise, good for Trea Turner taking a billionaire's money to make a few hundred million, or Aaron Judge and good luck to Juan Soto getting closer to a billionaire than he is to broke on his next deal.

What do the Trea Turner (11-years, $300 million) and Xander Bogaerts (11 years, $280 million) deals mean for any sort of long-term contract extension for Willy Adames... if anything?

No, Adames isn't in the same category as those two... or Carlos Correa (who has to be really, really excited now), but he is definitely in a similar place as Dansby Swanson... Maybe that's the deal that the Brewers and Adames would look at more.

Even so, Adames has two years of arbitration remaining... He would likely get somewhere around $25 million over the next two years... but after that, he could be looking at a 8-10 year deal at around $25 million per year. Would he consider signing an 8-year, $160 million deal right now? (AAV down because of the two arb years, and a little lower for the guaranteed money (as opposed to waiting two more years)

Nope
