Rumor: Cardinals Active in Free Agent SS Market

Swanson just seems like a Cardinal already. No real standout skill or statistical outlier, just allround solid getting value from defense, baserunning and an average-ish bat. Probably a 3-3.5  WAR type of guy most years with the occasional all-star year. Good player, but wouldn't mind the Cardinals spending a ton of money on him. But because he already seems like a Cardinal, it seems like an odd place for them to spend, as they produce that kind of player (or close enough anyway) frequently, most recently Tommy Edman.

I don't actually think they'll end up with any of the big shortstops in the end though. They seem to trade for and extend players, not sign big FAs. So these big 8-10 year deals don't seem as likely. Also pretty much their entire rotation are free agents after this year, they'll probably need to have a good chunk of money set aside for that.

I was shocked to see how low his WAR was other than last year.

Someone is going to pay for 2022 production and most likely not get it.

Here's hoping it's the Cardinals.

Last year I thought the Cards over performed their true ability (as a team), while the Brewers under-performed. I still believe the Brewers were the better team.
If the Cards add a SS after adding Contreras, and after the at-best lateral moves we've made, we might just be hoping for a wildcard slot.

As much as you want to believe that's true, it just isn't.

Standings reveal the truth.

*in your opinion

It's pretty factual actually.

Look at the 2022 standings, and it is laid out right in front of you.

The Cardinals won 7 more games than we did, it wasn't even close.

They were a much better team in 2022, they won 7 more games, and they made the play-offs.

It really can't be argued.

Standings never, ever tell the whole story of a season.

ok, what does.

The final standings are what dictates who moves on in the playoffs.

The standings don't account for injuries, luck (good or bad) but the standings do tell you who were the best teams that season.  Our 2022 standings tell us the entire story all right, and because you don't want to believe it, it's still true.  The Cardinals won 7 more games than we did.  They were the better team.

That is the entire story.

Look, the Brewers had 162 games to prove they were better than the Cardinals, they fell 7 games short.

It wasn't even close.

The fact that we have people that still think the Brewers were better than the Cardinals in 2022 is a joke.

They simply were not.

Ah, yes, the old labeling an opinion that doesn't perfectly align with yours as a "joke" trick...Nice demonstration of your supposed commitment to pluralism on the forum.

It's far from an unreasonable take. The Brewers ran away with the division in 2021 and were in first place for a large chunk of 2022, before injuries to their pitching staff caught up with them and team morale was decimated by the Hader trade. I don't entirely agree with it, but it's a fair argument/opinion.

It's only factual if you view it as a tautology.
