Wowza. That's an incredible AAV.

It is the same as Scherzer's.

So the Mets will have Scherzer and Verlander both at about $43m at the top of their rotation.  Scherzer at 38 and Verlander at 39 that is an old top of the rotation.

Competively maybe....but financially they both could totally flop and it would mean very little. No long term money tied up. Not even semi-long term.

Oh, I think their strategy is good, there's just quite a bit of risk in it. If I was the Mets, I wouldn't hesitate to play in those waters, either.

That's a good replacement for degrom, and over two years, I bet Verlander pitches more innings

The Mets are just setting themselves up for another postseason choke.

It's a pretty safe bet that if these guys stay healthy they will win the Mets a ton of regular season games. They are due to finally win the NL East.

But I've yet to see one of these big market teams ride their old dudes to a championship, at least not that I can remember. Even the Mets have a limited budget and you need pitching depth to go deep in the postseason that could have been purchased with $40+ million per year. Sometimes you need to win an 18-inning game like the Astros did.

Just another data point towards the Brewers not extending Burnes or Woodruff

Yep. The Brewers need to decide if they are going to put together a team that has a realistically good chance of making a deep playoff push in 2023. If they aren’t going to do that then they really should trade Burnes this off-season.

That part I disagree with, I don't believe the value difference in the return between this offseason and next is substantial enough to move either of them a year early

Oh, I think the value difference is considerable, especially given that we can't predict continued health 12 months from now.

This is nuts. He turns 40 next year. Seeing contracts like this gives me no confidence that the Brewers could sign Woodruff or Burnes long term unless they were willing to take a significant discount.

Can you imagine what Burnes would fetch on the open market if he were a FA this year?

It matters very little what it does for the Mets WS chances. What does matter is the tiny fraction of a chance the Brewers have or had of signing Burnes (lol) or Woodruff (smaller lol, but still) get smaller every time one of these pitchers who can't stay healthy (DeGrom) or were born before churned butter was a thing (Verlander) get massive AAV.  Burnes is gonna get 250 mil+. There's little or no doubt about that at this point. Even at age 30+, people need to stop throwing around the "hometown discount" tag on Woodruff. Obviously guys who perform at even a reasonably high level are going to get paid stupid money.

Maybe the argument is that they shouldn't be re-signing these guys, and that's a different discussion to be had, for sure. But if one is of the mind that the Brewers could, should, or would want to try to re-sign even one of these guys, the market to do so gets tougher when these contracts get tossed out there.

Burnes and Woodruff will get paid, no question about that, but the Scherzer and Verlander deals have nothing to do with them. Those are first ballet HOF pitchers coming off career years. Oh and they didn’t even have to commit long term.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.
