Two Brewers headlines at the top of MLBTR currently, Brad Boxberger's option declined and Tyson Miller claimed on waivers.

Honestly, not that surprised. Boxberger was really good for us the past two years no doubt, but his velocity and underlying numbers are starting to decline. Seems like a situation where we already got everything we could out of the guy, and that the best thing is to just move on.

So...when do they sign him back??

Considering the volatility of relievers, I thought picking up Boxberger's option was a no-brainer. But this team has made plenty of perplexing (at least to me) moves like this in the last couple years, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked.

Miller has a live arm I guess. Cheap dime-a-dozen reliever that I guess they hope to catch lightning in a bottle with.

Seems like the classic case of Sell high, buy low.  They obviously think Box has had his best days.  We will see how next year goes.  relievers are fickle so you never know what you are going to get.

I know nothing about Tyson other than looking at his stats.  He had low walk totals most of his career until they skyrocketed since AAA in 2019.  Maybe they see something they can fix.  Only costs us a 40 man spot to see what he can do, and they have those available.

But it's only 2.25 mil more to the Brewers, if I understand the buyout correctly.  He certainly started trending down the 2nd half of the year and that's likely the reason for this move.  But for 2.25 mil I don't see the risk here.  Really, the slow down in 2nd half was likely due to how much he was overworked for the stretch right before it so it's not unrealistic to expect a bit less usage that he'll still be a solid middle reliever again next year.

Well, I'm 0 for 2 on options. Box has been as consistently good as anyone not closing games the last 2 years out of the bullpen.  He's experienced and steady, which are nice things to have back there.  I'd offer him a deal for $1.5M with another $1.5M team option yr with $500K buyout.

So decline Box’s option for $2.25mil (buyout is already sunk cost) and then hand him $3mil guaranteed.

Brilliant.

no. 2 mil guaranteed and if he is STILL good you get him cheap another year. The buyout this year (.75) plus 1.5 plus .5 equals 2.75 guaranteed.  So you are saving 250K with the added benefit of possibly getting him another year for cheap (1.5)

Velocity down…….whip up……fly ball rate up…….mid 30s now…..obviously no such thing as a sure thing but they obviously have concerns and think they can do better going forward.
