Lasry selling his share to the Haslem's can't be considered a good thing, based on how poor the Browns are ran.

Eh, depends on how big the share is & what kind of power comes with it.

Before buying the Browns, Haslam bought into the Steelers ownership group to get a peek behind the curtain.

Could be a similar situation here.

Headlines on this are terrible, too, but I guess “Haslam Buys Bucks for $3.5B” grabs the eyeballs better than “Haslam Buys Unspecified Share of Bucks at $3.5B Valuation”

I think Edens is governor of the team for the next five years. Not sure what Haslam himself can do to ruin the roster.

From what I recall, Lasry & Edens had equal shares. Impressive that the Bucks sold for $550 milion in 2014 and now a (presumably) less than 50% share fetches $3.5 billion. I'm really wondering how accurate that price is since the Suns recently had a change in ownership and that franchise was valued at around $4B. I'm guessing there will be an adjustment to numbers, it wouldn't surprise me if the entire Bucks franchise was valued at $3.5B bringing Haslam's share price much lower. It's hard to reasonably say that the Bucks are worth north of $7B total.

I believe the sale is based upon the Bucks being valued at $3.5 billion. So Haslam is paying like $750 million or so for Lasry's approximate 25%.

Or is what I typed above what this means, the $3.5B is the valuation of the entire franchise? I guess that would make more sense, My eyes were skipping right over the part where it said "valuation".

I got there, just took some time lol

Rumor has it the Bucks were seriously considering dumping key guys for lower payroll in this past offseason. If Haslem can stay out of it and just pay up while we are still in a championship window, that is the best we can hope for. I don't have my hopes too high for that to be the case.

What 'key guys' do they want to get rid of?

This is why rich guys buy sports franchises. Not to dump money into championship runs, or bankrupt themselves to chase rings, but because the valuation of these franchises rises enough to make them a worthwhile investment. Lasry cashes out after 8+ years and has made a nice chunk of change.

But isn't it nice when they cash out and they win championships?

I have always wondered:  is it a requirement for an owner to be in the red every year to be considered a good owner?  Lasry came in, paid some cash, helped turn the team into a contender (with the help of Giannis and Horst, of course), and is leaving the franchise better than he found it.  I'm lucky to be along for the ride as a fan.

Oh, I'm not complaining about how the Bucks have been ran, by any means. This is just a general comment about *why* rich d00ds buy franchises. I'm even sure Lasry is happy that they won a championship. But I'm also pretty sure he's more happy he made a boatload of cash.

An insider on a different board said the team was exploring ways to justify to the fans for trading Middleton and Lopez this past offseason to lower payroll.

I am not sure that is really news or even insider information as there were plenty of should the Bucks trade Middleton and Lopez talks this past off season.

I think the Bucks found out even if they did that they wouldn't really get under the cap and would be bad for a year or two while angering Giannis.

Dumping those two for scraps to save payroll absolutely would have been major news. There were no reports I saw where it was discussed.

So Haslem has just as large of a share as dinen and Edens. At some point, I think he will be the governor? The devil is in the details and I know it will take some time for the sale to be official and then hopefully more light is shed on this.

also it’s crazy how much money building the fiserv and extending Giannis made Marc Lasry. Team went for 500mm to 3.5 billion in 8 years.

I was thinking you were talking about this upcoming off season. Gotcha.

Adding Haslem hopefully will mean the team will be committed to staying in the tax. I am assuming they are losing money right now.
