If that is actually true, maybe we should get that coach who develops catcher defense to work with Mario Feliciano. Spin it!

It's easy to twirl you around. Or maybe you didn't see Omar Narvaez before he got to the Brewers...,

I'd have Frelick at AAA, getting some work in at 3B and 2B, maybe even shortstop - he played those positions at the summer league in college, and perhaps he could be an answer at the hot corner.

sheesh.

I'd give it a try. Yelich still has value as a hitter (not a ton, but at least he gets on base and is a good baserunner). He played 1B in high school, if I recall. Maybe he'd be good with it.

Yelich at 1B + the return from a Tellez trade might make for a better team.

Looking at that, Renfroe also is a much needed RH bat, and it is another reason to hold onto Taylor, who has proven to be a solid 4th OF who also happens to hit right-handed. Brosseau is also a nice bench bat for this squad.

Esteury Ruiz would be an option to replace Taylor. IMO, one of them should be traded (ideally included in a larger trade).

Think Ryan Freel with much better offense.

I think bringing back Ryan Braun to play 3B and SS would be a better choice.

Would be their first time picking #1 also so not going to happen just because of that.  I haven't read the rules on the ping pong lottery but I am wondering if it is possible for them to pick in the top 6 if they don't get the 1st pick?  I think the NBA eliminates anyone outside the top 5 from winning a spot outside of #1.  But it has been awhile since I looked at the rules for both.

I'm fairly certain they can get any of the the top 6 spots, but that's it.

There's a website with the odds that's similar to the ESPN NBA Mock lottery with the draft odds. According to that, they'll be picking 2nd and they will select Chase Dollander from Tennessee!

The odds are terrible, but, what a boost to this system it'd be? Either take the BPA or go below slot and be in position to sign the 4-5 high upside players they couldn't come to terms with in this past draft.

Probably "platoon" wasn't the right word, but I'd consider Taylor the "veteran" option in terms of splitting time in right. I also would anticipate Taylor splitting time with Mitchell in center. In essence the starting three would be Yelich-Mitchell-Wiemer, with Taylor as 4th OF, and Ruiz as 5th OF.

I assume our allotment would go up if we had the first pick, so we could sign whomever we picked.

Well...depends on who you're picking. There is a reason why teams have gone so far under slot early on and the came back and went after guys with sign-ability concerns.

I don't know if we'd have been able to sign Petty, Lege, Cijneje, Noot, Hall and Neal if they had the 2nd pick, but they certainly could have signed a couple of them. And they wouldn't have had to go after guys below slot in the top 10. Getting Hall, Noot and Neal alone would have probably been worth it.

The Rangers were able to sign one of the top prep pitching prospects in Porter in the 4th round for just under 4M, but...there were still several players they couldn't afford. But either way, it gives us more money to add more talent.

The lottery has been set. According to Tankathon.com the Brewers have a .02% chance of picking 1st.  .03 chance of picking 2nd or 3rd. .04% of picking 4th or 5th and .05% chance of picking 6th.  So about a 98% chance of picking 18th.

The ‘22 Brewers will finish last in the NL amongst the teams actively trying to compete. The above scenario basically would tow the line, with a chance to maybe be better if they’re lucky.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but my point is why waste a year spinning their wheels? They need to have a plan for the future, they would win enough in the short run with Burnes, Peralta, Williams, Yelich, etc. to remain relevant and could start laying pierces for a serious contender in ‘24.

I’d exercise Wong’s option, but I expect the Brewers to let him go. Renfroe is an .800ish OPS corner OFer who will make 10 million dollars next year. Not necessarily a bargain and not necessarily a hitter they can’t live without which leads me to believe he should be non-tendered especially with the glut of minor league outfielders the Brewers have in AAA.

Were the Giants who won 107 last year not trying to win this year?

Stearns needs to go. He did well when he was exchanging Melvin's veterans for lottery tickets, some of which hit, but in the last couple of years he has shown himself to be a poor GM. Intolerable for a team like the Brewers. Fire Stearns and let Matt Arnold run the team and let's see if things improve.

Thats absolutely ridiculous and they definitely wont do that.

If I had to guess, I could see 13 players currently on our 40 man roster not on the 40 man next season. We currently have 38 spots filled on the 40 man with Sanchez and Jackson on the 60 day IL so technically 40 when they are healthy.

SP: Alexander

RP: Gott, Gustave, Perdomo, Rogers, Rosenthal, Suter

C; Narvaez, Jackson/Severino

IF: Hiura, Jace, Reyes

OF: McCutchen

Severino was previously DFA'd, and is already no longer on the 40-man roster. I could easily see Gustave, Perdomo and Suter back because they are cheap and decent pen arms. Maybe Gott as well, as he had his ups and downs but did look solid for some pretty good stretches. If Rogers is cheap, maybe. Maybe a ML deal for Rosenthal if he feels like he owes the Brewers, Jace will likely be back if his market doesn't materialize. Alexander, Narvaez, Hiura, Reyes and Cutch are likely gone.

Gustave, Gott and Perdomo no longer have options and Suter has 5 years of service time so he can decline an option. Most of these relievers will be gone because they are out of options/have better players in front of them.

Returning BP guys in this situation are Williams, Boxberger, Cousins, Strzelecki, Milner and Bush. Assuming we carry 6 SP that leaves 1 open bullpen spot which should be going towards an incoming high leverage pitcher.

I don't know if Cousins necessarily has a spot sewn up. As much as this board has wanted to jettison Suter over the years, he's the longest tenured member of the team, and I doubt he goes anywhere unless he completely implodes (which he hasn't). A 3.78 ERA, while certainly not great, is reasonable for a middle reliever.

Cousins started 2022 pitching 7th inning high leverage. He had an elbow injury he probably should have had surgery on but opted not to. Assuming he's healthy throughout the offseason, it's hard to see him not being on the opening day roster in 2023.

Suter made $2.7M this year and is arb 3 next year. Sure, he's been dependable, but he also rarely ever pitches in high leverage situations. Of the 144 RP with 50 IP this season Suter had the 15th lowest pLI. Unless he's getting a pay cut, I think the Brewers can fill that spot with a cheaper option. Maybe he returns, I just figured that's a spot the Brewers can save some money on with all the arb raises incoming.

Holby Milner over Suter and...then some NRI's.

Giving Suter 3M or more would be a bad use of resources.

And Jake Cousins has the type of stuff to be a VERY effective middle reliever or even, as you said, SU man. He'll be cheap and they've stuck with him this long. No reason to move on now when he's back, healthy and will have all off-season to rest his arm(or more likely rebuild his arm strength, but without the stress of throwing high leverage MLB innings).

I would see if Suter takes like a 2 year 3 million (total) dollar deal with some incentives ( like 1/2 mill for 50 inn pitched etc.). I wouldn't pay north of 3 million for 87 mph and a good clubhouse guy.

What about James McCann at catcher? I am sure the mets would eat almost all his salary and would cost next to nothing.

Assuming Chafin declines his player option, I would love for the Brewers to try and sign him in FA. Would be a great high leverage LHP. I think we probably bring Boxberger back. He's been an absolute workhorse the last two years, but I wouldn't be against declining his option and trying to bring in younger high leverage RP through a trade/FA.

Bullpen would look like this:

9th - DW

8th - Boxberger replacement

7th - Chafin

MR - Cousins, Strzelecki, Milner, Bush

LR - Houser/Ashby

I'm just very much of the belief that we need to have a much more solid BP next year even if that means spending some money/assets on it.
