A few things:

* I am not down on Frelick, just really high on Quero and impressed with how Wiemer cut his strikeouts at triple-A

* I'm high on Areinamo, but there is a drop-off right before him on this list.

* I'd have Devanney 14th if he was added to the 40-man and 22nd if he isn't, so I split the difference.

* As I said before, I think the MLB Pipeline folks got word the organization is really high on Guilarte so I adjusted things accordingly

* I put the ones past 20 in the quote box to save space.

Feel like it could go a lot of different ways after the first thirteen guys or so. My apologies to guys like Hedbert & Eduardo Garcia who while young for their level & tooled up to varying degrees, put up pretty alarming K/BB rates. Or a guy like Valerio whose plate discipline stats for his age in AA were great, but it didn't show up in his wRC+. Or Feliciano who still hasn't quite seemed to figure out the catching part. Maybe next year.

By wRC+ & K%, Yeison Perez probably had a more impressive season than Avina for low level breakout hitters, but considering Jace did it at higher levels while playing mostly CF where Yeison is a 1B/LF who has yet to come stateside, I'll give Avina the nod for now. Organization also seems pretty high on Luis Castillo, who made it all the way to Carolina in his age 18 season and posted an overall line of 120 wRC+ | 11.2 BB% | 21.2 K% on the year.

Also like the pitching depth whether its relievers like Robinson, Middendorf, Meeker, Garabitos or starters like Knarr, Jarvis, Castaneda, Henderson or intriguing teenagers like Anfernny Reyes, Osbriel Mogollon, Daniel Corniel. Abner could move fast if he comes back healthy in 2023 too.

Lastly, have to say my favorite part of doing this at the end of the year is coming across that guy you've never really noticed despite reading the link reports and checking box scores pretty regularly throughout the summer. This year's deep sleeper for me has to be Edgardo Ordonez. Over the last two seasons, as a 17-18 year old in the DSL, playing mostly catcher (273 innings) and some 1B (118 innings) he has hit 293/413/424 (136 wRC+) over 223 PAs with a 14.3 BB% and 21.1 K%.

As is the case with Sveumrules, I'm a little flinchy about some of the K rates (Garcia, Avina, Perez, some of the AA corner INF types) & that kept them off my board. Here's hoping for Feliciano. I really thought he handled himself well in the game or two I saw him w/ Milwaukee, but the defensive #s at the 'Ville don't lie. If he can become just average defensively to go with the bat, then you have both him & Quero and you're sitting pretty.

Sticking with a top 75 this update. Not going to add as much of an explanation for my top 20 as last update, but if you're curious, you can look at the explanations from last time Here. I did toss in a few more tidbits for some of my favorites outside of the top 20 this time.

TIER 1 70 OFP

  1. Jackson Chourio OF

Easily the best prospect in the system. Possibly the best prospect in baseball who hasn't touched the majors yet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIER 2 55 OFP

  1. Sal Frelick OF

Bat to ball and on base skills are elite. Good defender with a decent enough arm. Capable base stealer. Lots of Steven Kwan similarities, who is currently posting a WAR over 5 as a rookie. Not sure Sal will be *that* good right away, but it wouldn't shock me.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIER 3 50+ OFP

  1. Jeferson Quero C

I planted my flag on him last time and he went out and mashed to close out the season in High-A. This is a guy who could be an elite defender behind the plate with 20 HR power and limiting strikeouts. That's an all star catcher most seasons.

  1. Joey Wiemer OF

Still incredibly toolsy, I feel comfortable blaming his mid-season struggles on the thumb issue that was putting him in and out of the lineup. He hit very well in AAA and lowered the K rate at the same time.

  1. Robert Gasser LHP

After watching almost all of his starts at AA and AAA with the Brewers, I feel comfortable saying he’s the best pitching prospect in the system and that I think he will be impacting the starting rotation in the majors next season. The command did look a bit worse in AAA, but I think there was some fatigue setting in. The velo was bouncing around more than it did in Biloxi. I think he has 4 above average pitches in his Fastball, Slider, Changeup and Cutter. Fastball probably being the worst of the 4. He didn’t throw many curves for the Brewers, and that’s probably fine. It’s a mediocre 5th pitch at best.

  1. Garrett Mitchell OF

As mentioned last time, Mitchell is an enigma to me. I actually think his swing looks pretty good, despite the weird step in the bucket and his propensity for grounders, I think that it is actually more of a consistency issue with his hands than his approach as I’d thought in the past. The K-rate in the majors is obviously a concern, but I think it will normalize. His speed is game changing. I feel better about him being the future center fielder than I did before his callup, which is not often the case.

  1. Eric Brown SS

Brown technically got bumped back for me from last time, but that’s more about Gasser and Mitchell. I still really like EBJ. It appeared at the end of the season they were trying to normalize the load to something more “traditional”. Personally, I would have let that ride for a little longer, but I get why they felt the change may be needed. I will be interested to see how he adjusts to it to start next year.

  1. Jacob Misiorowski RHP

In terms of pure ceiling, Misiorowski has one of the highest ceilings of any Brewers pitcher I can remember. He’s freaky athletic on the mound, especially at his height of 6’7. Fastball has regularly touched triple digits in his short Low-A stint and in instructs with high spin. A possible 80 grade pitch. The slider is a wipeout pitch with high spin as well, potentially a 70 pitch. The changeup has apparently looked serviceable as well. It still comes down to command. Which may take a year or two to start improving. It’ll be a waiting game, but a game worth playing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIER 4 50 OFP

  1. Brice Turang SS

Turang was very up and down this season. Good start. Awful May and June. Fantastic July and August. Mediocre September. The glove is really solid and can handle any infield spot. I think there’s a good chance he’s in the majors in Jace’s role next year.

  1. Esteury Ruiz OF

Fantastic to see the bat still perform outside of the San Antonio hitting environment. He still hit in Nashville. Not sure the glove will ever be very good or that the power will manifest in the big leagues, but he should be a solid bench player with the platoon against lefties, which the Brewers need (he crushed lefties to the tune of a 1.166 OPS this season in 154 PA’s in the minors)

  1. Tyler Black 2B/OF

Nothing has changed since the last update since he has been hurt that whole time. Excited to see him in the AFL and see him get back out there. Bat will be a major league level bat. The glove is what I worry about.

  1. Carlos Rodriguez RHP

After a slow start in Low-A, Rodriguez finished extremely well to get the mid-season call to High-A. What he did at Wisconsin was quite incredible. An ERA of 1.98 and a K/9 of 11.1 to only 3.2 BB/9. He has three really good pitches in his fastball, slider, changeup mix and he commands his offspeed really well. The curve is more of a “get me over” when he tosses that in, but it’s probably a fringe-average offering as well, with time to develop. Very excited to see how he does next year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Double-A assignment to start.

  1. Hendry Mendez OF

His numbers don’t jump out at you but he was 18 the entire season in pro ball and was essentially a league average bat with a nearly even K to BB ratio. He rarely appeared overmatched and has a very mature approach. Mendez has pretty decent raw power, but will need to get to some of it in game, which I think he can. Baserunning was not great, but he is a solid defender with an ok arm. The bat is what will carry the profile though. Potential for a top of the order bat.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIER 5 45+ OFP

  1. Logan Henderson RHP

Pretty much nothing changed for me for Henderson from last time. He had one really tough outing in Carolina, but that will happen. I’m hoping for some solid results and experience in the AZ Fall League and to learn more about where he is at velocity wise now.

  1. Daniel Guilarte SS

Stealing this from a post I made in July  I don’t have many sources, but... "I have heard from one guy that I trust to be in the know, that the Brewers *really* like Guilarte. They told me that the Brewers think he can stick at short defensively and that he has a great arm. He's got plus speed. The issue sounds like it's similar to a lot of Brewers prospects, in that he hits the ball hard but is mostly on the ground and it's a slappy swing. If he can make a change and start elevating the ball more often, this could be a stud.”

  1. Jace Avina OF

The bat cooled down after the first week in A ball, but he still had a 120 wRC+ there as a 19 year old. He hits the ball in the air a ton, and he hits the ball hard a ton. Now we just need him to not strikeout a ton. 35% K rate won’t work. But the rest of the tools are all there for a really solid player with big time, in game pop. Let’s hope we see some improvement in the bat to ball next year!

  1. Ethan Small LHP

The command issues have been a concern for over a year now and it’s just gotten to the point where I just can’t see a great future for him. I always viewed him with some reliever risk, but at this point I think it’s basically his only chance at a major league spot long term. Some will point to Ashby getting opportunities to start, but Ashby has elite stuff. Small has mediocre stuff and a profile that was driven by his command… I hope he puts it together, but if some team still views him highly in a trade, I’d jump on that quickly if I were the Brewers Front Office.

  1. Stiven Cruz RHP

Cruz was bitten by the HR ball in Carolina, but still showed a ton of good qualities, striking out over 11 per 9 and walking only 2.27 per 9. His late season promotion to High-A couldn’t have gone much better. He struck out over a batter an inning, still limited walks and also limited the homers (although only in a 19 inning sample). I think he will gain some velo from his low-90’s fastball once he puts on some weight. I think the curve and the changeup are both above average with a decent slider as well. Definitely a guy I could see having a big breakout if the fastball does make a jump in velocity.

  1. Justin Jarvis RHP

Like Cruz, Jarvis had some issues with the home run ball this year, but he did make a leap in terms of his strikeouts and walks at High-A. I still see an elite fastball with lagging secondaries, but some improvement in the slider. Still see a lot of Woodruff similarities to the profile, but obviously a long way to go to be the current Woodruff.

  1. Eduardo Garcia SS

Still concerned about the strikeouts and propensity for swinging at everything. It’s a really good glove at short though, with juice in the bat. If the approach can improve, there’s already a lot to like here.

  1. Victor Castaneda RHP

  2. Hedbert Perez OF

  3. Cam Robinson RHP

  4. Abner Uribe RHP

  5. Alexander Cornielle RHP

  6. Darrien Miller C

  7. Robert Moore MIF

  8. Luis Castillo OF

Have heard he has some of the most consistently high exit velos in minor league baseball, but that it’s consistently on the ground. If he can elevate the ball more, there’s a lot to like in his offensive profile.

  1. Carlos Rodriguez OF

  2. Cameron Wagoner RHP

I think this could be an absolute steal in the 11th round. He has filthy stuff. Apparently academic ineligibility caused him to be unable to throw in games this past season. I can’t imagine if he was flashing the stuff he’s shown in pro ball, that he would’ve made it to the Brewers in the 11th.

  1. Luke Adams 3B/OF

The Brewers have done well with their day 3 high school picks lately. Adams got off to an extremely fast start in the ACL. Big pop, and appears to have a patient approach to go with it. I had assumed he’d move to the corner outfield (lot’s of Hunter Renfroe vibes for me), but I’ve heard positive early returns on his glove at third.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIER 7 40+ OFP

  1. Brandon Knarr LHP

  2. Jeison Pena RHP

  3. Aidan Maldonado RHP

Fastball velo isn't anything crazy, but gets really good movement and should break a lot of RHH bats. Slider shows flashes of being a true sweeper and could be a plus pitch.Changeup has shown big time flashes of moving like a reverse breaking ball. No command right now and doesn't take a ton off his FB velo. Curve is a fine 4th pitch that he used as his secondary in college. Guessing the Brewers will change that. He has already been working on a cutter (if there’s any good use for TikTok, it’s that there is some good video of Brewers minor leaguers on there). Really athletic arm that I like a lot.

1-Jackson Chourio
Nearly put Frelick here as good as he was in AAA, but Chourio getting the Acuna Jr comps with big power and 70 speed?
2-Sal Frelick
3-Brice Turang

-I've liked him more since he was first drafted.
4-Jefferson Quero
-Plus defensive catcher who outhit Chourio...albeit in a very small sampling in HiA, but still.
5-Joey Wiemer
Maybe the highest ceiling of a position prospect outside of Chourio. Another build a player type prospect from a video game with his size, speed, throwing arm, power...etc...his swing is just loud and he may have a little swing and miss, but I think he'll click.
6-Garrett Mitchell
-I really hope there are 3 players who are more MLB ready because Mitchell had a big impact on the Brewers with his speed. I think his defense will only get better as he gets more time in CF...he didn't seem comfortable near the warning track, but I don't expect that'll continue to be an issue.
7-Jacob Misiorowski
deGrom like velocity...which can ONLY mean he's going to be the most dominant pitcher of his era, except he won't deal with arm injuries and he'll develop quicker than deGrom. And I think those are perfectly reasonable expectations...
8-Tyler Black
The forgotten man. Could have been the "Nashville 6" if Black would have been healthy. Can play 3B, 2B, CF...presumably 1B. Arm limits his effectiveness at 3B(so I'm told, it looked good to me, but nobody's paying me to scout). And CF is probably out since we've got...6, 7 guys who are more likely CF prospects.
9-Robert Gasser
10-Estuery Ruiz
11-Jace Avina

-That swing is...incredible. I don't know how to judge his bat speed from the limited clips I've seen, but that is a nice, quiet swing that stays in the zone. Very advanced approach for a 19 year old kid in full season ball.
12-Cam Devanney-
A plus defender at 3B/SS? Have to imagine he'd be capable of playing all 4IF spots. But, could...maybe be that 3B we've been looking for? RHed bat which...normally isn't a plus, but we're about to be very LHed heavy. Plus, with the new rules regarding the shift, I think his value has really skyrocketed this past season. Mr. Zarr was ahead of the curve on this one. Also...looking at his trajectory, if he'd have been a 3rd round pick who put up good numbers in A ball in 2020, I think he'd be a unanimous top 10-15. But a 15th round pick form
13-Eric Brown Jr
14-Ethan Small

He's been bad. He's still a left with the potential for a plus change, a slider and a curve that hopefully can improve and then it's just about his confidence...I think. Trusting his stuff despite a low 90s fastball. Rich Hill was the comp, I don't see why he can't still reach that level.
15-Stiven Cruz
16-Hendry Mendez
17-Abner Uribe
18-Hedbert Perez
19-Daniel Guilarte
20-Carlos Rodriguez(P)
21-Robert Moore
22-Dylan O'Rae
23-Matt Wood
24-Mario Feliciano

25-Eduardo Garcia

1) Chourio    The AA promotion seemed a bit rushed in order to get more PT, but a bad week shouldn't hurt.

2) Frelick    Should start day 1 2023 somewhere, and I like the Steven Kwan reference, however he should have a bit more power and speed.

3) Weimer   Barring a nightmarish 25ish game stretch he had a really solid year.

4) Quero   He should be a top 100 on some list next year, it will be interesting to see if they are aggressive and send him to AA.

5)Turang  He gets lost because he doesn't have the loudest tools, but he is developing power that could lead to 20 HRs and has the speed to be over 30 sb. Another should be a top 100 prospect.

6) Mitchell   Hitting over .300 with 7 steal in 58 pa's should give him a lot of prospect status boost. If he was a year or 2 younger I could see him at #3. Another should/could be top 100 prospect

7)Ruiz     .332/.447/.973 with 16 HR's and 85 sb's and somehow he is #5-10 on our list. Another should/could be a top 100 prospect.

? Gasser  Responded incredible to the promotions, his stuff maybe limits him to a #3 starter ceiling.

9) Eric Brown   Good start after the draft, 19 sb really impressed me.

10) Black    It will be interesting to keep an eye on the AFL to see if he can get on track. At 22 in A+ hurts the eyeball test as high end prospect. Granted he was week(s) away from AA.

11) Carlos Rodriguez (SP)     I feel like he has a lot of Helium with a top notch end to his season.

12) Misiorowski          Amazing stuff, but he feels a little like Antione Kelly were there are going to be flashes but accuracy is going to be an even bigger concern.

13)Jace Avino      Power plays, strikeouts be damned he could be a fast rising next year.

14)Hendry Mendez   Solid in A ball at 18, the tools should develop here to gain more HR's

15)Alexander Cornielle

16)Stiven Cruz

17)Justin Jarvis

18)Logan Henderson

All 4 of these seem like solid prospect who could take off next year with small tweeks to gain a couple mph, ticks of accuracy, or in Henderson's case better health.

19)Mario Feliciano   Still only 23, he had a solid year. Yet it would be nice to see the power potential come back from 2019.

20)Cam Robinson   Jumped to AAA and struggled at 1st but seemingly righted the ship. He seems to be super athletic and I wouldn't be surprised if he plays a big role at some point next year on the big league club.

21)Robert Moore  Still only 20 despite 3 years of college. If he can increase his bat to ball skills a bit he could be a steal.

22)Ethan Small   If he had his struggles early in the year I would feel better about him. Hopefully just a mental reset will put him back on track.

23)Hedbert Perez  Still has the tools and age to be a big time prospect, but not a great year.

24)Eduardo Garcia    Needs to work on drawing more walks but in the same Hedbert category

25)Abner Uribe     Can't leave the 102 mph potential of the list, maybe he even has had some time to add a little muscle.

26)Felix Valerio     Batting average aside he had a solid year at AA as a 21 yo. If the contact skills returns he still be a high upside prospect.

27) Cam Wagoner    I read a report about his heater playing up to 97-98 and a power slider. I get a sneaky suspicion he will be this year's pitcher steal (ak Burnes, Woody, Nelson)

28) Matt Wood   I am drawn to the college stats and lefty bat. Hopefully he can adjust quickly and continue of a strong college year.

29) Carlos Rodriguez (OF)   He was on fire before the injury, still 21 an another guy who maybe the injury could be a blessing he he adds some muscle on his down time and gets some power.

30)Dylan O'Rae    I am going to trust the brewers scouting and add him in front of the young guys who were successful in the DSL.

I don't get the Can Devenney love, at 25 he should play well in AA. Granted I haven't seen alot from/about him until mid-year this year. He hit .175/.269/.530 in 2021.

I don't get the Can Devenney love, at 25 he should play well in AA. Granted I haven't seen alot from/about him until mid-year this year. He hit .175/.269/.530 in 2021.

In 2021 he was in his first full year of MiLB.
He was drafted, went to rookie ball and tore it up, then covid. Then a very aggressive promotion to AA where he struggled...which seems kinda expected.

And then this year he showed good power, good plate discipline, and maybe as or more importantly, he is apparently an outstanding defender.

If, hypothetically, they'd have sent him to A ball last year and he hit ~.300/.400/.550 with 25 HRs while playing 3B and SS at a very high level and THEN came back and excelled at 3B/SS, I suspect people may be higher on him. I'll be honest though, I don't get the "he should play well," when talking about a guy who just turned 25 at the start of the year and then hit AA/AAA. Does that mean for a good prospect he "should play well?" Because obviously most players don't play well at AA, regardless of age. He was league average and was among the league leaders in most offensive categories.

That's just my take. As I said, I didn't know anything about him until another member keep signing his praises and I went in search of some scouting reports and some video of him and he has a BIG arm and he looks very slide at 3B in particular, but also pretty smooth at SS.

But hey, that's the thing about these lists. You don't have to agree. It'd be boring. The poster after you had Stiven Cruz at #44 to your #16. Kinda fitting when considering what a crapshoot this all is.

I just read he had issues staying academically eligible...which limited some of the looks scouts got at him.

That seems to make sense. A big 6'5 righty with an upper 90s FB...

If all he threw was 14IP in the Cape Cod league...stands to reason that could have been the reason he fell out of the top 10 and then why he signed in the 11th.

Hopefully his aversion to class is our gain.

I am not saying Devanney doesn't have potential, just as a 25 year old I struggle to put him above guys who are 20/21 in A ball/AA ball who have had some success. I usually tune out defense unless they are very high end or low end defensive grades, just because I feel like it is hard to gauge unless you watch large chunks of a minor league season. My "he should play well" is more that any 25 year old who is decent should hit like .280 because they are a couple years older than your average prospect. I feel like the 15th-ish organizational ranking is putting a guy as a potential starter where I think he probably falls more into the 25-35 range as a potential utility guy with some decent power.

Yeah that's a great point on opposing view points.

One guy likes young pojectablity vs. someone prefering stats and current tools.

Also it is hard to gauge all these guys watching some highlight clips and reading what scouting reports from where and whomever we can.

I watched the entire Minor League season, fwiw. In 13% of the Double-A sample size (AB's) at Triple-A Nashville he held serve - ie there was zero regression. It's too small a sample, obviously, but the point and observation 'should be': there was zero regression. Better OPS. Better BA. Same power numbers. Same absolutely fantastic defense. Outside of Turang, today, he is clearly the best SS and 3B in the system. And, honestly, it just isn't that close. He pushed the conversation and he pushed the envelope. You can go ahead and toss Eric Brown Jr. into the picture due to his draft slot, age, and his extremely limited exposure (and then shelved for rest) sample at Low-A Carolina...but, Devanney is clearly backing up Turang on the left side of the infield regarding prospect readiness today. For example, Ben Metzinger is 23. He is nowhere near the 3B player Devanney is. He lacks the twitch and has half the arm. Anywho, my two cents.

** I should add, until Zamora gets healthy and proves his 2022 season pre-injury was an aberration and 2021ish production is more the norm, he is in the waiting room for me. Until Eduardo Garcia can demonstrate he can identify pitches consistently, he will remain a nice back-up prospect for me. I love Garcia but I watched all his games. Super-talented, solid defender. Solely a SS. Not enough evolution in his game, as of yet, to be super excited.

The two most difficult jumps in levels in baseball are AAA to the majors and A+ to AA.  Personally, I place more value in guys who have successfully made the jump to AA.  For me, the lower level guys need to be killing it in order to put them ahead of guys in AA-AAA who are doing really well.  That's also why I have Mendez so low; yes, he is very young and has nice plate discipline, but a .318 SLG need drastic improvement to give me the confidence that he can make the jump to AA.  Same with Carlos Rodriguez (OF).

Also, I place extra value on someone who plays a premium position where it's hard to find both good offense and defense.  If he played LF/2B/etc, I would not have him ranked this high.

Good thoughts here.

I would say, my personal opinion is Mendez is one of those anomalies. I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised in his age 19 season. He has so much fluidity to his game. His swing is pure and true and smooth and he walks just as much as he strikes out - ie he's already demonstrated he can lead off. He just started to get his foothold and then he ran full speed into the right field foul territory wall - look at his July he was stellar (0.356 BA/ 0.871 OPS/ 90 ABs...ran into a wall. Shelved for two weeks. Never found that rhythm). I think the sky is the limit with this young man. Watching him play on the regular, he instills confidence and a belief. Given his swing, power is merely a time concern for me.
