Imagine if baseball let all of MLB, AAA, AA, and A ball play against each other.

That's college football in a nutshell.  Great product.

That's a pretty accurate analogy, but the alternative would be the top 40 or 50 schools in one division, with the rest separated. Personally I would find that boring, and lacking in a lot of good potential story lines.

Also, a New Mexico State, Wofford or Middle Tennessee traveling somewhere to lose 45-3 pays a lot of their bills, for a lot of their sports.

And we'd still clearly be one of those 40-50 teams and we'd still be getting abused as we did last week.

If you're referring to Ohio State (or one of the other top 4-5 teams), where we're at right now I'd agree. I see no one on the remaining schedule that should be "abusing" UW to that extent save for the type of colllapse you usually don't see.

When Alvarez took over, his vision was clear: build a defense, control the ball via the run, build the wall around the state by securing front-seven & lineman types, and get the "arms & legs" (skill position players) largely from outside.

Herbstreit said OSU became elite when Urban Meyer came in and OSU went away from this philosophy.  Of course, it is a little bit of apples and oranges.

I'd say more like apples & watermelons.

One school recruits. The other selects. Urban Meyer left Bowling Green for $$$, of course, and there's nothing wrong with that. But he also realized the built-in advantages at FLA or OSU, not the least of which is the national media doing your recruiting for you whenever a kid turns on the TV. Not to even mention the difference in academic standards & admissions. If he went away from a prior philosophy, it's because he was at one of the few schools where he could, and do it successfully. At the same time, he's STILL recruiting high level linemen too.

Here's Kirk Herbstreit in a nutshell: Logan Brown has been a disappointment since coming to Madison. He only started Saturday due to injuries to others. But when talking about the UW O-line early in the game, he's talking up Logan Brown because he was "a five-star recruit". We all realize it's cool to actually get paid to do what you do Kirk, but maybe at least put in a little prep work.
