Locking threads referenced in other threads

I know that bandwidth costs $$, however I think we need to address the issue of locking threads that contain links to articles in other threads. This may not be the appropriate forum, but I think some folks are getting a little too picky about which ones to lock, and some folks need to be a little more descriptive about the contents of their thread in the title of the thread.

Example - the thread with the link to the article in the USA Today previewing the Brewers 2007 season. It was locked because it was previously linked in this thread entitled "Some Brewers News". First, that is perhaps the most generic thread title I've ever read, and honestly, if the title of the thread does not interest me, I don't read it. Second, the first post in the thread was about Tony Graffanino and Geoff Jenkins (so put that in the title!), so even if I did open the thread, I would have read no further than this post, especially to page 2 where the link was posted. Third, the link had nothing to do with the original post, so it should have been put in a separate thread on it's own with a description that somehow references the "USA Today".

Brewerfan.net Law:

1) Please be somewhat descriptive in the title of your new threads as to the content

2) If your post has nothing to do with the original post in the thread, start a new thread with it

3) Let's be a little more lenient with locking threads, especially when the original subject is buried in another thread about something completely different

Sorry for the rant. Have a good day.

It is really late Thanksgiving night, I haven't been to BF in days or posted in months. So maybe I'm here to chime in on this. This is a little opinon a little devil's advocate and a little predicting the future.

To me "USA Today article on Crew" is only a very little bit more descriptive than "Some Brewers News." We now know where the news is from. Maybe if there was a little more of a discussion starter than "Some interesting info on our top 5 prospects at the bottom of the article, too" it might have lasted (like asking if others agree with the statement "The eighth overall choice in a draft class of 2005 that has already produced third baseman Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals, Braun, 23, doesn't seem far behind.") After all LouisEly look at how much thought you put into your post. Admittedly, I'd have enjoyed a discussion of a decent article at a time when I'm hungry for Brewer news. The "USA Today article on Crew" thread just seemed to have made itself easy for a Mod to lock.

For the future...I can see this thread being moved from "Major Leagues" to "Brewerfan.net Issues & Events." Maybe even being locked here with a link to a new thread over there using LouisEly's post as a start. That would be a little ironic.

Sorry, had no idea I was stepping on someone else's toes. To me, the originator of the thread, this seems like a perfect situation for locking. It's not an insult, I just made a simple mistake in not finding this article already referenced.

I know I thought, "Man, no one has posted this article yet", when I posted the thread. It's good to know both that someone else had already posted the story, and that someone was there to pick up my mistake. I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!!

I'm definitely with you on the descriptive titles; those non-descriptive thread titles continue to bug me all the time.

In the USA Today article example, however, at least a link to the duplicate thread was given, so you could just click on the link and still get to the article and discussion. I think limiting the discussion on an article to one thread is usually a good thing.

I started a thread the other day about the future problems that the Brewers will face in FA, and lo and behold, I'm instantly reminded by another poster (non mod) that "this discussion is already taking place in the Soriano thread"

Well, my thread wasn't locked, but that's not the point. The Soriano thread was about Soriano, and this year's free agent crop. My thread was about the future of the Brewers ability to be able to sign free agents in general. I think that's more than enough of a difference to warrant a new thread.

That being said, it seems like there's a decent thread going, and suddenly, WHAM! it's locked, with a link to a similar discussion that's buried 4 pages back and 3 weeks old. I know this forum costs an arm and a leg to run, concerning post counts, views, and so on, and I appreciate that, but I know most posters don't want to go digging 5 pages back to make sure there's not another topic mildly similar to what they want to start a thread about. And it seems quite often that the topics are different enough to warrant different threads. That, and a lot of posters don't bother once the post count in a thread reaches a certain point, because you feel like it's not going to get read, because most of the people in said thread have said what they're going to say.

And then right on top of the main forum, is a thread about who should be in the OF, Hall, Weeks, or Braun, and I know we've had that discussion just about as often as the "strikeouts don't matter" threads, and nobodies made the point of linking to one of the many threads on the topic.

Now, this isn't exactly the same issue as the OP brought up, but for the sake of similarity, I didn't start a new thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I think people are just looking for some consistency.

It's a fair point, and certainly made a lot harder by the fact that ezboards's search feature completely sucks. If/when we get on Brian's board, this should dramatically help, as then you really can just search on the topic and see if it's been talked about recently.
