Article: Brewers Minor League Link Report (9/1): A Short Misiorowski Debut Before Mudcats and Sounds Walk Off Opposition

Jon Singleton powered Nashville to a 6-5 victory with a homer and four hits. Hedbert Perez and Carolina refused to be denied. Big days from Jeferson Quero and Cam Devanney weren’t enough for Wisconsin and Biloxi.

 

Exciting 2022 second round draft pick Jacob Misiorowski lasted just five batters in his scheduled short debut for the Mudcats, who came back late to defeat Columbia in extra innings.

Nashville’s early lead slipped away before the club scored two in the bottom of the 9th to walk off Memphis, the last on a Joey Wiemer full count walk.

Wisconsin had no answers against Peoria, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-3 defeat.

Victor Castaneda kept Biloxi in the game over six solid innings, but the bullpen got rocked in an 8-2 loss to Rocket City.

Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Singleton, Perez, Quero, Devanney and Castaneda, with an honorable mention to Brice Turang.

• RHP Luis Perdomo recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville
• RHP Noah Zavolas released from AA Biloxi (the 26-year old last pitched on August 5th and went on the season-ending injured list on August 11th)

1B Jon Singleton (4-for-4, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) did the early heavy lifting, knocking in three runs in his first two at-bats, the latter a two-run bomb in the 3rd inning to stake the Sounds to a 4-0 lead. That’s his 22nd home run of 2022 to go along with an absurd 99 walks.

The middle innings saw Memphis grab a 5-4 lead, though Nashville was just waiting for the bottom of the 9th inning to send the home crowd happy.

Three consecutive singles from OF Sal Frelick (1-for-4, walk), SS Pablo Reyes (2-for-5, double) and 2B Brice Turang (3-for-5, RBI) tied the game at 5-5 before Memphis intentionally walked Singleton and then accidentally walked OF Joey Wiemer to end the game 6-5.

How does Mr. Turang look at second base, you ask?:

The victory gives Nashville a 2-1 series lead and keeps the team 2.5 games ahead of Columbus for first place in the division.

Three Quick Strikes:

• A late scratch of RHP Dylan File forced RHP Marcus Walden (3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) into starting on short rest, though he managed very well over three shutout innings, before being lifted after two singles opened the 4th inning.
• RHPs JC Mejia, Hobie Harris and Trevor Kelley combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, with Kelley earning the win for his effort. Pedro Severino was another bright spot, going 3-for-4 as Nashville outhit Memphis 14-8.
• RHPs Zack Brown and Jake Cousins struggled a bit in their combined two innings of work, conceding three runs (two earned) and allowing two inherited runners to score.

Friday’s outlook: After just four games in AA, 23-year old LHP Robert Gasser (3.82 ERA in High-A/AA) will make his AAA debut for the Sounds, who aim to extend their series lead.

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Big Seventh Sink Shuckers

Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (6 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks) danced through traffic over six innings to give the Shuckers a chance, before the bullpen entered and the wheels came off in the bottom of the 7th inning.

The offensive bright spot was SS Cam Devanney (2-for-4, HR, walk, RBI), who walked and scored in the 1st inning, then connected on his 19th homer of 2022 in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game 2-2.

LHP Clayton Andrews’ post-injury road back to AAA may appear longer after retiring just two of the seven batters he faced and exiting with the club down 4-2 and the bases loaded. This was his fourth appearance of 2022 and second this year with Biloxi. Don’t worry Clayton – better days are ahead!

Three Quick Strikes:

• Unfortunately, things didn’t get better when RHP Robbie Baker entered in relief of Andrews, as he beaned a batter on his first pitch, then gave up two singles as the deficit ballooned to 8-2. At least RHP Robbie Hitt added a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in his short work.
• The team went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base, but DH/2B Felix Valerio (1-for-2, 2 walks) reached base three times and six Shuckers collected at least one hit on the day.
• Biloxi’s led every game in the series (2-0 in Game One, 5-1 in Game Two, 1-0 in Game Three), but unfortunately appear to be out-gunned against this strong Rocket City club (73-50 record).

Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr gets the call to start on Friday, with Biloxi needing a repeat of his last outing (6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 6 Ks) to avoid a 4-0 series deficit.

Wisconsin led this game 3-2 in the 4th inning on the strength of solo shots from DH/C Darrien Miller (1-for-4, HR, walk, RBI) and C Jeferson Quero (3-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs), but the game was all Chiefs from that point.

Starting RHP Israel Puello (5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) struggled to hold that lead, giving up three consecutive hits in the bottom of the 4th inning as the team fell behind 4-3.

Peoria grabbed four unearned runs against RHP Miguel Guerrero in a sloppy 6th inning, then another four runs off of struggling RHP Tyler Gillies in the 7th inning to extend their lead to 12-3.

Three Quick Strikes:

• The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the 4th inning, but collected just one run after two strikeouts and an out on the bases, followed by Manager Joe Ayrault being ejected.
• There were unfortunately no highlights for OF Jackson Chourio on this 0-for-5 day, but it was a welcome sight to have him back manning center field for the first time since a recent injury.
• RHP Christian Tripp was solid in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and 2B Ethan Murray collected two singles on a 2-for-4 day.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.20 ERA in Low-A/High-A) will make his second High-A start (5 1/3 IP, 2 R, 8 Ks in his first one), trying to lead Wisconsin to a 3-1 series advantage.

Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Perez Hits Tenth Inning Walk-Off in 7-6 Victory

The exciting debut of 2022 second round draft pick 20-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (1/3 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 0 K) was a bit of a letdown, as he walked four of the five batters he faced and exited after 32 pitches. Of course, it was always going to be a short first appearance for Mr. Misiorowski.

Spencer Michaelis (Twitter: @smichaelis234) summarized the performance as follows, “Well Misiorowski didn’t make it out of the 1st inning (pitch count). He got squeezed on a few that Trackman thought were strikes. Including on 3-2 to the lead off. Then he had an auto ball for a BB after a long 3-2 battle. Fastball was *very* lively and touched 100 though. Slider backed up on him a few times but also threw some pretty decent ones. Was very close to a 1-2-3 inning with the tight zone and auto ball. Baseball is a funny game sometimes. Most importantly, his pure stuff does look pretty special.”

That said, the GAME was terrific, as Carolina battled back to tie Columbia three times, the last being a two-run 8th inning to send the contest into extras, in which the Mudcats prevailed 7-6 on a DH/OF Hedbert Perez (3-for-5, two doubles, 2 RBIs) run-scoring single to bring home OF Hendry Mendez.

Mr. Perez was involved throughout, as he also doubled and scored to tie the game 3-3 in the 2nd inning, then drove home OF Luis Castillo (1-for-4, walk) with an RBI double in the 6th inning to narrow the deficit to 6-4.

RHP Alexander Vallecillo (5 IP, 3 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) got the longman’s duty on this day, battling through five innings of three-run ball before exiting with the team down 6-4.

The 8th inning rally started with walks by 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-3, two walks) and Castillo, followed by run-scoring singles from OF Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-4, walk, RBI) and 3B Alberis Ferrer (1-for-2, walk, sac fly, 2 RBIs, SB) to knot the game at 6-6. Chirino also singled to open up the bottom of the 10th inning.

LHP Pablo Garabitos (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) collected a deserved win with three shutout innings of work, including not allowing Manfred’s ghost to score in the 10th inning.

Three Quick Strikes:

• RHP Trevor Tietz did very well to induce a groundball double play to strand all three runners left on base by Misiorowski in the 1st inning, but then ran into trouble himself in the 2nd inning, giving up two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsmen.
• Not to be lost in the heroics, 2B Robert Moore smacked his first home run in the Brewers’ organization to tie the game 1-1 in the 1st inning.
• Obviously working his way back to full strength after a recent absence, this was 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr.’s first game back in the field, although he went 0-for-4 and exited after eight innings.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Max Lazar is scheduled to make his second rehab start with the Mudcats, who seek a win to tie the series 2-2 at home against Columbia.
