So...regarding what is acceptable

I will agree with Al on this issue.

one of my biggest beefs in the past was when several of my posts were deleted. the posts were deleted without warning or private message. ( for new posters, this happened several years ago, and the situation was resolved.)

however, there does seem to be a double standard about posts that insult or make fun of other posters.

i recall a poster whose first name I believe was Clancy or something like that. it seemed like everybody cut him down. and nothing was ever done to those who mocked his posts. I also recall many people ripping Al saying he brings it on himself. and there was no action taken against those people who ripped Al.

i also recall a poster who was mocking brian in an unpublished chat session two months ago, and he was banned imediately.

we seem to have a different standard when we rip posters verses when we rip moderators. and yes, sometimes whether it be in fun or jest ... sometimes a moderator posts something that is out of line and he/she is deserving of being ripped. however, when ripping a moderator or his post, there is always the fear that being banned will be the result. i know if i rip Al and call him a toyboy, nobody will do anything. but if tell brian he has bad taste in socks and pets, it will be my last post made.

I recall the last time i was banned. i was defending the rights of somebody else's free speech. I wasn't defending my rights. i trust we have all learned something from that .

I think Al has a very valid gripe. Al and I go back a long ways. We hated each other for years. he rubbed me the wrong way, and I replied in kind ten fold. but through our differences, we realized we both have a lot in common. the same goes for myself and Brian.

I think the moderators should revist this issue outside this board to make sure they are all on the same page.

I can understand why politics and religion subjects are not appropriate. the best of intentions always ends up bad. but personal attacks are also not appropriate.

Exactly how many established posters have been banned on these boards in the last couple of years? Three? It takes hard work and dedication to get yourself banned.

Peavey,

The brewerfan political scene board (p201.ezboard.com/bbrewerf...icalscene) is still active, right? Would it be a good idea when discussions seem to be going in that direction for a mod to immediately close the thread and put the link for that board so that, if posters wish, they may continue their discussion completely off the brewerfan home board? I'm not sure how ezboard works, but would it even be possible to move the discussion (like how you can move from the OT forum to Issues - is it possible to move a thread from brewerfan OT to the brewerfan political scene board?)

Although I agree that political and religion topics are rarely discussed without becoming hostile and really have no place on a baseball message board, it would be nice to be able to have a venue for (hopefully) civilized discussion separate from this site. For example, I minored in Religious Studies and love discussing different religions, especially their early history, so my X-Mas post was more of a history debate than religious (the thread was about your opinions, so I admit I did throw one in there that may have resulted in the thread being locked).

Or maybe more people just need to be reminded of that site, similar to how you promote lambeauleap.net whenever a football discussion emerges?

All I know is that the one time I poked fun at someone (in my four years of posting), my post was edited by a mod.....who happened to be the person I was poking fun of. When I asked this person why they did this without a warning or why I wasn't given a chance to edit the post myself, I received no response at all.

Funny thing is, this person is no longer a mod so maybe I wasn' t the only one with a problem?

Funnier still is this person now feels there is uneven treatment on this board.

Heh.

I think that's called a triple standard. It's fine to be alright with odd-numbered standards. Doy.

As i said earlier , i think the mods and editors should discuss this offline. I believe certain mods, just like referees, have different levels of tolerance.

A poster can post one thing in one forum and get a little slack, but say the same thing in another and be edited for their actions. I'm not saying either mod is wrong or out of line.

a question I have - does brewerfan post anywhere who the mod for a forum is? i know who the mods are, but i don't really know which mod moderates which forum.

and i stilll blame rydogg for telling me to include some additional !!!!!! and #$%#% in my posts. Casey edited it and said I was swearing. it was rydogg's fault. i didn't realize using the pound and dollar and percentage signs to form a word was a form of swearing and excessive use of punctuation.

as for Al's complaint, i think it has merit.

as for the poster I mentioned being banned, it was about a month ago when a bunch of us for no apparent reason started a chat session. Brian was there. Some other guy whose name i can't recall started making some off hand remarks, and brian told him in the chat he was banned. i don't know if brian actually banned him, if he was a long time poster, if the guy had previous warnings, or any history about this guy or if the two of them were just joking. but it made the rest of us guys like me wonder - wow - he got banned for saying something in a chat room discussion? it was kind of like witnessing a drive by shooting. You never know what led up to the banning or if he was actually banned or not.

Sometimes you don't know if brian is being serious or is just playing with you. it's kind of like me telling colby to buy another cat to fix his mouse problem or me telling fatter than joey to join tthe YMCA rather than buy an exercise bike. there's a fine line between being serious and sarcastic.

For the record Reed, I've never even disliked you, never mind hated you. Back when I was a mod, I did edit some posts that ripped on Clancy, and told the folks to take it easy. I believe they all wrote back and said they were probably over the line, and said they would stop (there was only 2 or maybe 3). Geno has spoken in defense of Clancy a few times as well, and I agree. But, as noted by the mods who have participated, even if a warning is given, they leave the post.

I think you did hit on the issue better than i did though, some teasing and name calling is fine, and some is not. I have never noticed any stricter monitoring of that against Brian, but if it is deleted quickly, maybe I wouldn't see it anyway.:) The "line" is very tough to see, or at times, totally invisible. If we feel that way, I'm sure many others do too.
