Marquette Basketball 2022-23

Shaka could be in line for a top 15 recruiting class in 2023. They already signed Zaide Lowery (SG) and Al Amadou (PF), and most predict they will get another SG in Tre Norman which would give Shaka (3) 4 star recruits.

Obviously replacing Lewis is going to be tough next season. The incoming freshman class isn’t very strong. Wrightstil is in an exciting grad transfer, but hopefully his 2021 class continues to improve if they want to make some noise in the big east.

As a general thought I am going too need to give Shaka another year or two before I judge him on his signings.  Hopefully we can see some improvement over last year this year though sometimes the second year is tougher than the first year.  Year three and four usually tell you more about a head coach than the first two years do.

Norman commits to Marquette. That gives them 3 top 100 recruits but I’m 2023 they currently have more players than scholarships. That problem always cures itself with transfers or players declaring for the draft though. Impressive first real freshman class for Smart. Probably will be rated Somewhere around 15 when it’s all said and done

Yeah that was a nice commit for Marquette.  Hopefully he lives up to the ranking as Marquette has recruited really well in the past but got nothing out of the players.

It will definitely solve itself after this season as players are going to transfer out as that is a given.  Even if all the players were happy there is just not enough playing time to play everyone.  Some who have higher aspirations to play in the NBA are going to want to get as much playing time as possible.  So some will transfer for playing time and others because they want to be closer to home or some other reason.

I am not all that worried about a team having more players than spots on the roster as that works itself out the majority of the time.

Rough year so far for Marquette but tonight was nice!

I don’t think it has been that bad this year. They had 2 close loses to 2 pretty good teams and some non-inspirational wins against teams not that great. They are a young team though, and that is expected. They still have some tough non-conference games that will be a tell on how good they can be.

This is about how I expected things to go. Marquette has looked pretty solid for the most part but as expected rebounding is an issue with this team. This team is young but has a lot of guys who could be realllly good soon. Sean Jones is already a two-way threat and has better offensive Dominic James written all over him. This team needs to be better defensively. They were great vs. Baylor but when they don't turn teams over they struggle defensively deeper in the clock. But Kam Jones and Sean Jones is going to be quite the backcourt and Chase Ross is built and already a nice player as a true frosh. Oso Ighodaro has also looked a lot better this season. This team has a bright future although I am not sure this year's team will be great record wise in a tough Big East. But this squad is built very strong for the future and has a great 2023 class coming in

Shaka was clearly the right coach for the job. It's so exciting for Marquette to get him after he already had that bad experience at Texas and will probably be content sticking around for a while.

Clearly there are some institutional issues at Texas, I don't know how a place with all those resources continues to underperform in both basketball and football.

Basketball is third fiddle to baseball and football there, that's why basketball will never be great.  But they and their boosters operate like fan message boards - one underperforming season and the grass is greener on the other side, fire the coach and on to the next bright shiny object.  Money puts a lot of pressure on the AD to make the decisions that the boosters want.  Money also brings people in who are just looking for a paycheck - coaches and players.

Hopefully Shaka realizes that going to a school like Texas isn't what is all meant to be. College BB is filled with stories of coaches leaving a great situation to go to an elite program and only to fall on their faces. Sometimes jobs like Texas are open for a reason. Either boosters will never be happy or its a hard situation to win in, or whatever.

Will Shaka ever win a natty at Marquette? probably not. Can he make some elite 8 or final 4's? possible. Can he make a boat-load of cash at Marquette. yes. I know Crean and Buzz were as well compensated during their time as Marquette as about any coach in the country.

Up to 8th on kenpom. I’m expecting a decent jump tomorrow when the new polls are released. It should be a fun 2nd half of the big east season. Like I said, they are doing with after loosing their best 2 players last year and didn’t really add anything significant. Shaka is easily coach of the year

Playing super well, and fun to watch.  With almost every team in the #10-#15 range losing today, there's a shot at a top 10 ranking on Monday.  Would be awesome to win a conference championship.  Creighton is back humming now and might be the biggest threat.

The offense for Marquette can be really bad at times.  The game against Butler today is a good example they were up 12 and then all of a sudden nothing and Butler nearly comes back.  If it wasn’t for Butler falling apart offensively also that could have been a loss.

I am not sure how deep Marquette will go in the tourney if their offense goes completely dead cold like the game against Butler.

heading into the butler game they were #1 in offensive efficiency in the nation. Saturday was their worst played game of the year, so you can't judge much by it. Even going into the game, Donny Marshall said that this is a classic let down game for MU, and they pulled off the win.

they are still 4th in the country in offensive efficiency after that clunker as well.
