Did we give up World Series chances?

The piper does not have to get paid if you are a fantastic scouting and developing organization as the Padres are under Preller. I do not think he is that great of a GM but Preller has been great at the scouting part of the game going back to his time in Texas when it was his players that got to the World Series and that team hasn't been the same since he left.

They decimated their farm system. Absolutely tore it to shreds. There were no half measures taken.

The kind of talent they traded away is not the kind of talent that can rebuilt in even two years. And the Padres are fully aware of that. Sure, they can draft and develop nice players over the next couple of years but what they traded away took over a half decade to build.

And good for them! I'm not saying they made a mistake, baseball teams should sometimes do crazy ****, it brings energy to the sport... but it's not my preferred method of franchise management.

They clearly paid a high price but I expect Soto to sign long term to make the trade worthwhile and while it will take a few years to rebuild the farm system Preller is as good as it gets at that part of the job.

I'm a little more skeptical Soto will sign an extension but agree that Preller is very good at building organizations.
