Soto and Bell to the Padres

This is a gigantic win for the Brewers, keeping Soto out of the NL Central and especially out of St. Louis. The Cardinals have done nothing to improve.

The storylines of a Brewers/Padres wild card matchup would be pretty interesting. Certainly this solidifies the Padres as a serious postseason contender this year.

We don't even know if Soto will end up signing with San Diego. They already are close to maxing out their payroll. They might have to blow the whole thing up in little over two years.

That’s one of the most interesting aspects of this deal, for me. Will Soto stay in San Diego? They have a whole bunch of talent and should now be real contenders for a good while, assuming everyone stays/gets healthy (a big if).

If Tatis comes back, having him, Soto and Machado in the heart of their order is a nightmare for opposing pitching staffs.

San Diego has such a huge trump card in being San Diego. There aren’t many places that can compete from a sheer climate standpoint.

They may have to blow it up, but in the mean time, that lineup is going to rake.

I’m more concerned about their pitching. Blake Snell just hasn’t been the same since moving from Tampa, and Darvish is getting up there in age.

I'm not even somebody who proposed Soto coming to Milwaukee but who cares if people are talking about a Soto trade in a Brewers forum whether it is fun or serious. You've already made plenty of posts that Soto wasn't coming to Milwaukee, don't  really need another one.

I made one post about it yesterday, and one today.

That’s plenty? Okay, then.

I don’t care what people post about. They can say whatever they’re thinking, as they should. But if they say something absurdly beyond the realm of possibility, then it’s also my right to post about that.

Sure about that? Because this seems a bit more than “fun and jest”.

It's not impossible to think the Brewers could package, Ruiz, Gasser and some of their other prospects for Soto.  A trade of Hader and Prospects for Soto and Taylor Rogers looks a lot better.

Padres were one of the favorites for Soto.  Could Ruiz be a guy who helps get Soto?  His minor league numbers this year are phenomenal.

What if the Brewers are just shedding payroll to pickup Ohtani or Soto?  Would be an interesting strategy.

If Stearns can somehow pull off that miracle, he’ll deserve to be in the hall of fame even if he achieves nothing else for the rest of his tenure.

It definitely gives them more ammo for another move. You’re not trading Hader for Soto…but could a couple of these guys be flipped with a few of our own to put a package together for a Soto or a Reynolds now? We’ll find out soon…

Yeah. Nothing in that line of quotes screams serious to me.

Talking about possible package deals and shedding salary to make a big move doesn’t sound like a bunch of kidding around to me. It comes across as at least entertaining the notion that Soto could be acquired.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree, and I’m good with that. I respect your opinion. I’ve been wrong before. ?

I doubt Soto will stay in San Diego. First, he's represented by Boras and just turned down a monster deal, so it's pretty likely that he is going to go year-to-year and test free agency.

Second, it's hard to say what the Padres are doing, but they're losing an awful lot of talent over the next couple of years and have traded away most of their prospects. I don't care how good your middle of the order is, you can't win by paying your 3-4-5 hitters most of your payroll and surrounding them with guys you pick out of the independent leagues.

It will be very interesting to see what their roster looks like in a couple of years.

I, too, doubt they can afford three 300$ million dollar contracts at their market size. And Soto isn't just going to be going for $300 million. He'll top $500 million easily when he hits FA...

Not sure why people think we had no chance to put together a deal that was similar. Not like the Padres gave up some mega star Top 5 prospect. I mean someone thinks we would have had to put in Woodruff to even get close, what? Chourio, Frelick, Wiemer would have been a pretty good start to the package. We have plenty of other solid prospects and high ceiling lower level guys to fill out the deal. Certainly you add Ashby to that deal and it is arguably better than the Padres package. Of course maybe a couple other minor leaguers could have sealed the deal without Ashby and made it happen.

I am okay not getting Bell/Soto...but the Brewers could have easily put together a package if they wanted. They had similar prospects and similar MLB ready guys.
