Soto and Bell to the Padres

Quote

11:50am: Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter) that Hosmer is no longer involved in the deal after refusing to waive his no-trade protection. Soto is still being traded to San Diego, but it remains to be seen whether the rest of the package will change.

Good for him ?

I suspect they'll sign him to a huge deal. That is a team that hasn't shied away from spending recently.

If he turned down a half billion dollars from DC and Boras is his agent, the chances of him signing an extension are probably zero.

I would nix the deal if I was Hosmer.  San Diego is a great spot to play and live.  I would not like to be in DC.  You get paid regardless and if San Diego holds on to you, you're in a playoff/WS run.  If they DFA you, you still get paid and can possibly choose your next destination.  You owe nothing to the organization and it's actually a pretty insulting move to not get your ok on the no trade prior to accepting a deal.  It should be approved before your name even comes up in a discussion.

Looks like you're getting your wish.

What are the odds San Diego deals Hosmer today?

Also, there was this earlier in the week, which is a baaaaad look for the Padres:

It's hilarious that anyone would even consider the chance he would opt out. as a free agent, he'd get a minor league deal with ST invite, that's his current skill level. Considering the 10 and 5 rights, there's extremely high chance he's traded by 5. one way or another.

Probably unless there is a three team deal somehow where he lands with another contender.

I love all three of Gore, Hassell, and Abrams, so that’s a legit haul for Washington. Not sure the Brewers could have come close, even if Mitchell and Chourio  were the headliners.

Yeah, I think the closest would have been something like Ashby (Gore), Chourio (Abrams), Frelick (Hassell), Wiemer (Woods), and Gasser (Susana).

If San Diego is eating the salary, I would actually be interested in the Brewers coming in as a third team to pick up Hosmer (if we are not on his no-trade clause or if he considers us a contender). No, he's not great overall, but he hits LHP well: .350 wOBA against LHP this season. We could use him as a 1B/DH platoon bat.

If San Diego paid most of the contract (like, all but league minimum), this might not be the worst idea. They're probably about ready to DFA him after today, so maybe the Brewers could get him for nothing. If they don't want him after this year, they can cut him and only be on the hook for around league minimum for a couple more seasons.

If not, then at least Hosmer can enjoy the nice San Diego sunshine while all of the Padre fans boo him every time he comes to the plate.

Again, Soto was never….never coming to Milwaukee. And it amuses me that people actually discussed this possibility.

No one actually seriously entertained the possibility. The discussion was more in fun and jest than anything.

I mean, that is what the Trade Rumors/Proposal board is for… to discuss things about trades even if they are a fantasy.  I doubt anybody really thought the Brewers had a real chance of getting Soto.

And yes, I know this is no longer on the Trade Rumor/Proposal board but that is where a majority of the discussions that amused you took place.

It's going to leave us all wondering what the standalone return for Soto or the standalone return for Bell would have been.

Wood for Bell seems like too much.

Susana for Bell seems like too little.

Sure about that? Because this seems a bit more than “fun and jest”.

It's not impossible to think the Brewers could package, Ruiz, Gasser and some of their other prospects for Soto.  A trade of Hader and Prospects for Soto and Taylor Rogers looks a lot better.

Padres were one of the favorites for Soto.  Could Ruiz be a guy who helps get Soto?  His minor league numbers this year are phenomenal.

What if the Brewers are just shedding payroll to pickup Ohtani or Soto?  Would be an interesting strategy.

It definitely gives them more ammo for another move. You’re not trading Hader for Soto…but could a couple of these guys be flipped with a few of our own to put a package together for a Soto or a Reynolds now? We’ll find out soon…

The discussion I was referring to took place in the Josh Hader reaction thread.

This is a gigantic win for the Brewers, keeping Soto out of the NL Central and especially out of St. Louis. The Cardinals have done nothing to improve.

The storylines of a Brewers/Padres wild card matchup would be pretty interesting. Certainly this solidifies the Padres as a serious postseason contender this year.

We don't even know if Soto will end up signing with San Diego. They already are close to maxing out their payroll. They might have to blow the whole thing up in little over two years.

I'm not even somebody who proposed Soto coming to Milwaukee but who cares if people are talking about a Soto trade in a Brewers forum whether it is fun or serious. You've already made plenty of posts that Soto wasn't coming to Milwaukee, don't  really need another one.
