Soto and Bell to the Padres

Nats got 3 high 1st round picks (Hassell, 8th overall in 2020,  Abrams 6th in 2019, and Gore 3rd in 2017) along with a 2nd round pick (Wood).  Seems like a decent haul for them.  Even if the Brewers were inquiring, I don't think they had the same pieces to offer.

That's nothing, we just added an even higher 1st round pick (Bush, 1st overall... in 2004)

The Padres farm system is decimated now. If they don't drop substantially in the system strength ratings, it is proof of just how useless those ratings actually are.

Sure but they can just trade Soto again and get back quality prospects if they don’t win in the next couple of years.

What this trade shows is that the Padres actually want to win and realize prospects don’t really matter because all it takes is a trade or two to “re-stock”

That's kind of nasty of the Padres to let this trade leak before getting Hosmer's approval. Now he's under immense pressure to accept even if he doesn't want to.

Imgine if he saidI no ?

Maybe so, but there was no way the Brewers could have equaled this value in prospects. They would have had to add Burnes or Woodruff, and even then, the Nats aren't looking for expensive players already in their arby years. They want guys with lots and lots of team control to go along with tons of talent.

What if Hosmer nixes it with his no trade clause! That would be incredible, a huge package like that down the tubes because he'd rather be in the nice weather of San Diego on a winning club, then in DC on a currently irrelevant team.

They'll just replace him with Myers, or the Nats will send back money in the deal.

11:36am: Hosmer is “not thrilled” about the idea of waiving his no-trade protection to go from a contender to a rebuilding club, tweets Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Bowden, meanwhile, adds that San Diego would remain on the hook for Hosmer’s salary over the 2023-25 seasons if he were included in the deal, with the Nationals only picking up the remainder of this year’s money.

If San Diego is eating the salary, I would actually be interested in the Brewers coming in as a third team to pick up Hosmer (if we are not on his no-trade clause or if he considers us a contender). No, he's not great overall, but he hits LHP well: .350 wOBA against LHP this season. We could use him as a 1B/DH platoon bat.

I would nix the deal if I was Hosmer.  San Diego is a great spot to play and live.  I would not like to be in DC.  You get paid regardless and if San Diego holds on to you, you're in a playoff/WS run.  If they DFA you, you still get paid and can possibly choose your next destination.  You owe nothing to the organization and it's actually a pretty insulting move to not get your ok on the no trade prior to accepting a deal.  It should be approved before your name even comes up in a discussion.

I doubt the Nats would send money back, you could be right about swapping Hosmer for a different bad contract.
