01/18/07 - 5:21 PM - Received acknowledgment from Yuku migration staff

board import request

Hi Brian,

I'll be co-ordinating your migration with our programmers and skin creation with our designers. Once I've gone over your board requirements with the group we can begin creating your skin in preparation for the migration, and I'll update you on when the actual migration will happen.

When the board is migrated we'll get you to look over the forums and check that all looks fine, and as soon as you're happy we'll redirect your ezboard. The shorter time span between those two events, the less chance of posts being made at the ezboard after migration - ie, they won't be on the yuku board. You could temporarily close your board to posting if this was a major issue, or we could redirect the board automatically rather than you checking it first. This is up to you.

You don't have to do anything at this point in time, although I will probably set up a test forum for your skin to be created in, so that you can see how that looks before the migration too.

cheers,

alison

  • 5 weeks later...

This seems like a good time to pass some stuff along about Yuku.

  • Brian indicated in another thread that he doesn't know when this site's migration will occur. I don't see that as an issue. The cost is the same either way.
  • Brewerfan.net user accounts will be migrated along with the site. In other words, once Brian migrates, each of us will have a Yuku account. The big difference is that with Yuku, we'll be logging in with our e-mail addresses. If you happen to have forgotten which e-mail address you've associated with your ezBoard account, you should check.

If you'd like, you can migrate your profile early. The main benefit that I can see is that you'd have the ability to post under your current ID on Yuku boards.
  • New users will need to be careful when signing up for a new account. It's really easy to end up posting under one's real name.

Yuku's staff members have acknowledged that the sign-up system is screwy, so it's not like they're pulling something over on us. The trick is to note that a username is picked on page 2 of the signup. If you accidentally miss this, all is not lost. You can create a second profile with the username of your choice and set it as your default.
  • Yuku lets you store images right on its site. You can choose whether or not to share them with other users. However, even if they're hidden from view, you can link to them.

The system is pretty basic. You can put images into folders, but you can't create subfolders. The file name is changed to a long number and a picture's URL doesn't make a lot of sense.

Still, because the post editor gives you direct access to your images, this is handy to have around. Additionally, there's no limit to the number of images you can upload.

Yuku also offers users the ability to link to a Photobucket account. Like images stored on Yuku, you can access your Photobucket images right from the post editor.

There's a bug, however, in that people can't currently unlink their Photobucket accounts. I don't know when that'll be fixed, but I do know that it's been going on for a while.
  • Avatars are also uploaded to Yuku. What actually displays in your posts will be a 100 px by 100 px thumbnail of your image.

Your ezBoard avatar that's migrated to Yuku will be stored in some undetermined place in Yukuland. If you don't have any other direct access to that picture, you may want to make sure it's uploaded via your profile.
  • Your profile will contain ads. Unfortunately, the ads probably won't reflect your interests and a lot of them offer opportunities to meet people you won't care to meet. Yuku is aware of this issue.

They've suggested putting some kind of bio in your profile that outlines your interests. I wasn't up for doing that, but I did stick a bunch of "keywords" in a box. I subsequently hid that box with CSS, meaning 99% of users aren't subjected to it but Google will still see it. I haven't seen any of this helping, though.

By the way, don't even consider attempting to hide the ads themselves. That violates Yuku's terms of service.
  • The WYSIWYG post editor is definitely beta. There should be a new one soon, though.
  • Problems with horizontal scrolling will be eliminated. You'll no longer have to scroll back and forth to read each post of a thread containing a single wide image or table.

Images or tables that are too wide will place a scrollbar in the individual message. That scrollbar will only move the image/table. You won't have to scroll to read the text of the message itself.

This is pretty slick. I've never seen a message board effectively deal with this issue before.
  • You can have up to 5 signatures. You set one as a default, but each time you post, you can flip over to one of the others via a popup. You also have the choice not to use a sig in a particular post.

Just tried this and got an error message from Yuku. Followed all the steps, clicked on the button and error. Has anyone else had this occur?

Do you remember what the error was? I could probably find out if I had more information.

Also, you could try going to yuku.com and logging in to see if your migration "took" despite the error message.

I did get a message in my email from them with a link to follow to complete the registration and got the same error. They had also supplied a second link to follow if the first didn't work and I think that one took. I haven't tried to log back in yet.

I want to say it was a 404 error? The error was shown on a Yuku page, if that helps.

I just went and checked it out, Casey. I'm registered and it's working. The secondary link they provided got me registered.

I should have mentioned the e-mail confirmation when I posted above. It's there to prevent spamming. ezBoard does the same thing.

I see you got in and played around with your profile. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah, I had a little fun with some of my info.

So now I just wait for our board to switch over?

You're the only person I've ever heard of with that particular combination of sex, status, and orientation. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Basically, you just wait unless you want to play with your profile, post on other Yuku boards, or take advantage of being able to upload images.

Or you can start a blog in your profile. I can't tell you how that works, though.

How do I log out of Yuku? I don't see a link.

1. Click on the menu button in the navigation bar (top or bottom right).

2. Click on the logout button in the Account box (the second box below your avatar).

When you first go to log into ezBoard, there's a graphic link inviting you to migrate your profile to Yuku. Follow that. The same thing may be available in My Control Center. I can't tell you for sure because I have a migrated account and it may not show up for me.

Yuku has reserved all ezBoard usernames and e-mail addresses for their current users. A migration will automatically pick those things up and they'll be the same on Yuku.

The only people who'll notice a difference in their username will be local users. In those cases, "brewersfandemonium" will be appended after the username. (Gypcasino, you're a global user rather than a local one.)

Well I started playing with my Yuku profile:

LINK

Apparently google ads is the most important thing about me, since it's located front and center and can't me moved. Now, I don't mind some ads but the location of those ads is very obnoxious.

One other issue. I can't get the html blocks to work at all. Are their restrictions to what tags can be used? Is it pseudo-html or something?

I think it's obvious that ezboard is trying to leverage the popularity of their message boards to make Yuku the new and hip social networking site. Apparently, I'll earn "kudos" for spamming my friends with requests to join the new myspace. I think they'll fail miserably but in the end, people like us will just have the option of ignoring it all anyway.

Hey, now Yuku is apparently spamming everyone in my hotmail address with an email pretending to be me:

Quote:
Hello,

Hey this is rluzinski you should check out yuku!

Here is a link to my profile: rluzinski.u.yuku.com?refe...rluzinski.

See You There,

rluzinski

Real ****** nice. I guess you can't click on the link to see who on your hotmail address list has a Yuku account, without spamming everyone with a stupid email? Did I miss some small fine print or something?

Stuff like this really pisses me off.

I haven't run across this issue. I get e-mails informing me of PMs and a 'daily digest' when there are responses in any threads to which I subscribed.

You might want to check the help forums to see if this is a new issue.

EDIT: Did you play with the Find Friends page? I haven't tried that, so I'm just guessing.

EDIT 2: Eliminated question that you had already answered.

Well, I pasted the content of the message above. Someone replied to the email I supposedly sent them, thinking I was personally inviting them to check out my lame Yuku profile.

Right after transfering my account, I clicked on the hotmail link allowing me to see who in my hotmail address list already had a Yuku account. I then had the option of clicking on those that didn't have one to send an invite to Yuku. I clicked on no one and just backed out of that screen.

Curious, indeed.

Well, I pasted the content of the message above.
I just saw it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif

I posted the message, walked the dog, saw the error, edited, had my internet connection go down, then finally corrected the message.

I'll play around with your specific question when I have a little more time. There has to be something you did that we can tell others not to do. Or, of course, there's the possibility of a bug. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I probably should have known the answer to the profile question without checking. This is something that will confuse a lot of people until they "get it."

(Note that this applies to editing your profile, making posts, and writing PMs. The editor is essentially the same for all three tasks.)

You put HTML into the WYSIWYG view of the editor. In WYSIWYG, you have to use the little tools to create your image link. Straight code posted into the WYSIWYG view will show straight code.

The button to the left of the Spell checker will switch you to HTML view. Code pasted into the HTML view will be processed.

Here's what you would have wanted to see in the WYSIWYG view:

Editor in WYSIWYG view

And here's what you would have wanted to see in the HTML view:

Editor in HTML view

Once all is said and done, you'll get something like this:

Russ' HTML box

By the way, the WYSIWYG editor we're seeing is a brand new one 'pushed' within the past day or two. I've spotted a couple of bugs. I'll fill everyone in a little more once I get a handle on them.

Yuku pushed a new navigation bar last week. Logout is now right in the bar and is easy to find. No more digging.

I didn't report back on the WYSIWYG editor because it was changing daily for a while. I'll look for any bugs we might care about when I get a chance.
