Yeah, the Twins went on a tear about a month ago where they absolutely lit up the Jays, Yankees, and Rays starters but then lost four of five against Detroit. Minnesota’s offense is very good but has been prone to laying down and dying against pretty bad pitchers.

If they often lay down against bad pitchers George Costanza should pitch a shutout but call me crazy if I would still prefer Burnes over a AAAA picther.

Starting Burnes on Thursday instead of Tuesday and Sunday is skipping a start with the all star break following the game on Sunday. If the team feels he needs the extra rest no problem but that means skipping the all star game or the plan makes no sense at all.

How is that the case, when pitching in the all-star game is no different from a regular bullpen session for these guys?

For sure. Are they just using the ASG as reason to keep Corbin fresh and get him a lot less work over a couple of weeks?

Burnes pitching in the All Star game would be 2-innings maybe 3 at the most usually it is just 1 or 2 innings.  It would basically be a bullpen session.  The Brewers are also known as a team that will try and get their players into the All Star game not just getting there but actually playing.  There are some bonuses that get paid out for this.  For example there maybe a bonus stipulation for Burnes where he earns a bonus if he is named the starter for the All Star game.

I didn't see anything in his contract about this when they avoided arbitration but it maybe something that is in the contract and is just not known at this time.  There maybe a bonus for being selected to the All Star game and one for playing in the game.

Pay him whatever bonuses he has since he has clearly earned them but there is no reason why he shouldn't be pitching twice this week.

The really bigger picture is that the organization is showing itself to be player-friendly, whether that’s about the chance to earn contractual incentives or just a player’s desire to have the honor of taking part in the ASG. Whether this player-friendliness pays any future dividends is questionable, but you do what you can when you’re not one of the big-spender clubs.

That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have preferred Burnes going twice, but I’m not going to be too upset.

An old phrase is certainly anecdotal but it was Spahn, Sain, and pray for rain.  I'm also not implying our back end is that bad either. Just that Boston lined those 2 up back to back.

"back end" usually refers to the top relievers.

It doesn't surprise me he'd want to opt out to be with his wife and new child instead of playing a meaningless game.

If opting out gives him a chance to rest and reset, I’m all for it.

Pitch him on Tuesday & Sunday, then give him a couple extra days into the post ASG portion of the season if they want to give him a break. Horrible decision IMO.

Yeah i don’t care if he starts the all-star game, i want him starting for the brewers. This is similar to when CC started the final game before the ASB and then pitched the 1st game back. If he starts on Sunday, he could start Friday as well.

While doesn’t matter in the grand scheme but I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t replace Hader with WIlliams.

Rondon has a 3.3 WAR (6th for P), 2.7 ERA (8th), 11.1 K/9 (2nd), 124 K (3rd), 0.36 HR/9 (1st), and 152 Adj ERA+ (7th). Like RWeeks23 said, surprised he wasn't already selected.
