2002 All-Star Game: Share Your Memories

We are getting close (10 days as I write this) to the 20th anniversary of the All-Star Game played at Miller Park.  That was July 9, 2002.  You probably remember how it ended.

Let's have a thread of memories about it.  I'll start with some of mine.

Our SSH status goes back to the mid-1990s, so we could buy tickets to all of the all-star week activities before the general public.  I passed on the home run derby so my SO could take his teenage nephew (trying to score some cool aunt points, I guess).  We had terrace box seats for the stadium events.

Among my more random memories of the actual game was the pre-game extremely long (or so it felt) ceremony honoring MasterCard and MLB's Memorable Moments.  Everyone who attended got a seat cushion with the Memorable Moments logo.  We still have ours, though we rarely use them, but I still see people bringing them to games.  The seat cushions had a variety of promotional goodies inside, including a mini box of Oreo-Os cereal.

I remember being struck by how many fans were wearing Brewers gear.  That was simply less of a thing in 2002 than it is today.

Imma stop here for now and let others chime in.  (I'm pretty sure I have a longer account of my memories buried deep in an email folder, so I'll have to see if I can find it.)

My girlfriend's mom got us tickets in the outfield for the homerun derby, which I was more interested in seeing than the actual game, so that was super cool. The Best Damn Sports Show Period was setup out there as well so I got a random Tom Arnold autograph, lol. I also managed to get a ball tossed to me by Vladimir Guerrero before the derby started. The derby was fun to watch, Sexson had a good showing, but it was highlighted by the shows put on by Giambi and Sosa, and I distinctly remember seeing Sosa blast a mammoth homerun over Bernie's slide. It was a fun day!

I attended the Sunday afternoon Futures Game with my then 5 year old son.  Teams were split up USA vs the International Team.  My son brought an American flag to root for the home team.

Even though I explained it to him, he didn't fully grasp that this was a prospects game; he was SURE he was at the actual All Star Game.  He might still think so.
