LHP Manny Parra Looks To Be Next In Bullpen Line

problem with that is i can think of 2 instances off the top of my head within a span of a week in which he directly caused us to loose (that sunday game in minnesota and then a week later against KC).

I can also think of 2 instances off the top of my head within the span of a week in which Cordero directly caused us to lose.

again i never said Spurling was a bad pitcher. All I said was if you look at the pen, and Melvin wanted to get rid of a pitcher, i would choose Spurling. Currently

Cordero

Turnbow

Wise

YoGo

Villy

Shouse (just barely)

has more value in my opinion, than Spurling.

Every reliever has cost us games. The better question is how oftern does it happen. Cordero was so good for so long, the fast he blew 2 straight relieve appearances, should be treated differently. If Parra i going to come up, one of the relievers needs to go down. If not Spurling and instead of trashing my opinion, suggest a different one.

I'm not trashing your thoughts on who would be DFAed. As I said if soemone would be DFAed it would most likely be Spurling. I just don't agree that someone has to be DFAed. As was mentioned it could have been as simple as they didn't know if they were going to replace Hall with Parra. Or a trade. It's just not very likely at all to simply drop someone who is productive to replace him with someone who has all of what a month in AAA. There is no way they DFA Spurling for Parra. It's just bad managment.

bc i think we are on the same page, and things got blown out of proportion. I agree that letting another potential starter sit in the pen and get lefties out here is not the best idea. Spurling is not a bad pitcher, (his ERA proves it). I just upset with Ned puts him in late inning situations when his closer and top set up man has yet to get into a game because they only come in when we are winning. Thats all.

Chris Spurling is a 30 year old who has never been more than an 11th or 12th man on a major league pitching staff. That's he performed in that role better than many, is not really the point.

The point is that within the Brewer organization are pitchers who project to be better than 11th or 12th guys on a major league pitching staff, and if it's determined they are now ready, you don't have the Chris Spurlings of the world block them.

Parra recently tossed a AAA perfect game. As was reported in the minor league forum, Grant Balfour, who is putting up terrific numbers in AAA, was hitting 96 on the radar gun just last night while fanning 5 in two innings.

Both those guys could be valuable contributors not just in 07 but in 08 in more important roles than mopping up.

Could Spurling be traded? Perhaps. But despite his relatively decent numbers, he's not going to bring back much.

I don't want to go too far down the Spurling road
I don't think you went too far down that road (http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif), but the thread is still headed that way.

Again, please put detailed Chris Spurling discussion in the 'Spurling: How long do we need to suffer?' threead.

Why do we assume he is going to be added to the bullpen?

Everyone keeps talking about how he take a long time to warm up - therefore making him a pretty useless LOOGY.

What is we were looking to trade Vargas and try Parra as a starter? With the way Vargas has pitched lately, he can't be much worse. And that certainly solves his "can't warm up quickly" problem.

Worse case scenario he falters and we move Gallardo or Villy to the rotation?

Gross had two hits in his last start, he is far from "stinking it up". His OPS is quite respectable, especially for someone capable of playing CF.

I'll go as far to say that I'd rather have Gross in the starting lineup over Gwynn. I hope they have Gwynn up to be the 4th OF and not start, because we need all the offense we can get right now, and Gwynn is the one who's unable to hit out of a paper bag.

Maybe we're making a bit of collective leap by thinking that a Parra callup is imminent. But I have to think that given Mass Haas' post, the Brewers are somewhat satisfied with the warmup issues.

In the short term, I think a spot would have to 'open itself up' to accommodate Parra. But if he were called up, putting Manny in a 'Villanueva' or 'Gallardo' bullpen role would certainly be intriguing.
