Question about the Falwell thread?

Why is it acceptable for someont the express the opinion that it is a sad day that Jerry Falwell died, yet people's post who said that it was anything other than that got deleted?

I fully understand why my post was deleted but I am anoyed that the original post is allowed to express an opinion about Falwells death, yet people who posted the opposite thought, were deleted. It seems like there is a double standard.

i think it is a fair statement to say its a sad day when someone dies. Its sad for his family and his friends, while you may not be bothered by it one way or another. Its really not appropriate on the day of a man's passing to go around and bash what he has done and what he has said through his life, which is all that was done after that initial post.

Besides that saying it is a sad day does not have any religious or political overtones, everything after that did.

I thought about removing the "sad" comment, but it's so ambiguous that I didn't think so many people would take exception to it. He was a celebrity, and obviously he had family and friends who mourn his loss personally. If the original poster had celebrated specific aspects of this person's opinion, I would have been more inclined to edit it.

If you fully understand why your post was deleted, then you simply did yours as a retaliation to the first poster... I guess I'm not a big fan of that.

I think in an "every man's death diminishes me" sense, it's OK to say that Mr. Falwell's death is 'sad.'

The history of religious and political discourse on this forum has been such that just about any other comment on a topic of this sort will get out of control quickly. That is unfortunate, but it makes me support Brian's decision.
