The Brewers have won just two of their past 12 games, but thankfully there are eight Brewers affiliates to follow. Hopefully, there are some positive things happening in the organization. Click below to see how the affiliates performed last week. 

 

These Minor League Week in Reviews are getting long. They are filled with how Brewers minor leaguers, from the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, down to the 17 and 18-year-old kids playing in the Dominican Summer League. Who played really well? How did the teams perform? While wins and losses are secondary to player development, it is a part of the game that matters to the players. There were several transactions on Monday. Both Rookie League affiliates played on Monday morning. There has been a lot of Brewers minor league coverage all week, so be sure to keep checking back.

WEEK IN REVIEW 

Triple-A: Nashville Sounds : 
Week: 2-4, hosting Norfolk  
Season: 36-23 overall, 1st place in the International League West. They are 1 1/2 games ahead of Columbus and Memphis.  

It started with a rainout, and then the Sounds lost the next three games. They won the next two games and had a chance to split the series before a 7-2 loss to Norfolk on Sunday. They were outscored 27-23 for the week. 

• He gave up some base runners, but Caleb Boushley tossed six scoreless innings in his start. He gave up five hits, walked three and hit one batter. He struck out three batters. 

• Lucas Erceg made a spot start and a relief appearance last week. He struck out four batters in three scoreless, two-hit innings. 

• Andy Otero worked five innings out of the bullpen in one game. He gave up no runs and no hits. He walked two and struck out three batters. 

• Tyler White played in four games and went 6-for-13. He hit .462/.467/.692 (1.159) with a double, triple, and five RBI. 

• Jonathan Davis is a defensive wizard in center. In five games last week, he went 5-for-19 and hit .263/.364/.579 (.943) with a double, a triple, a homer, and five RBI. he also walked three times. 

• As a backup catcher, Brian Navarreto doesn’t play a lot. He went 4-for-6 with two RBI or his two games played. 

What’s Next? The Sounds will travel to Memphis for six games.    

Pitching Probables (LHP Ethan Small, Tyler Herb, RHP Josh Lindblom, RHP Caleb Boushley, RHP Dylan File, LHP Ethan Small) 

Double-A: Biloxi Shuckers  
Week: 3-3, hosting Tennessee    
Season: 26-29 overall, 2nd place in the Southern League South Division. They are 3.5 games behind Pensacola. They are a half-game ahead of Montgomery and a full game ahead of Mississippi.  

This was the definition of an evenly matched series. Tennessee won the first game, and Biloxi won the second game. The Smokies won Game 3, and the Shuckers won Game 4. Tennessee won on Saturday, and Biloxi won on Sunday. Both teams scored 37 runs in the six-game series. 

• Noah Campbell had 14 plate appearances in five games last week. He went 6-for-12 and hit .500/.571/1.083 (1.654) with a double, two homers, and also two walks.

• Cam Devanney played in all six games. He went 9-for-22 and hit .409/.500/.545 (1.045) with a double, a triple, and four walks.  

• Sal Frelick went 11-for-27 in six games. He hit .407/.467/.630 (1.097) with three doubles and a home run. He also walked three times. 

• Joey Wiemer played in five games. He went 6-for-21 and hit .286/.400/.476 (.876) with a double, a homer, and four walks. He was also 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. 

• He got a promotion, but Brandon Knarr was terrific in his Double-A debut. He gave up just one run on five hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out eight batters.

• TJ Shook gave up two runs over five innings in his start. He gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out six batters.  

• Zach Vennaro pitched in and finished three games. He tossed four scoreless innings and gave up two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. 

What’s Next? The Shuckers will be headed to Chattanooga to take on the Lookouts.  

Pitching Probables (LHP Brandon Knarr, RHP Noah Zavolas, TBD, LHP Nick Bennett, RHP TJ Shook, LHP Brandon Knarr)

High-A: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers  
Week: 2-3, at Beloit    
Season: 33-23 overall, 2nd place in the Midwest League West Division, 3.5 games behind Cedar Rapids. They are 3.5 games ahead of South Bend.  

The first four games of the series were all close. While Beloit won three of the four games, all four games were decided by two runs or less. On Saturday, the Rattlers won 12-4. Then on Sunday morning, the news came that the sixth game of the series was canceled due to Covid. Wisconsin outscored the Sky Carp 23-18. 

• Zach Mort came out of the bullpen once and tossed four scoreless innings. He gave up two hits, walked two, and struck out three batters. 

• Ryan Moore had a terrific start. He gave up one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He also struck out seven batters. 

• Justin Jarvis was strong again in his start. He gave up three runs (1 earned) on six hits in seven innings. He struck out nine batters without issuing a walk.

• Antoine Kelly gave up one run on four hits over six innings in his start. He walked two and struck out five batters.

• Wes Clarke played all five games. He went 6-for-20 and hit .300/.364/.700 (1.064) with two doubles, two homers, and six RBI. 

• Tyler Black played four games and went 6-for-16. He hit .375/.474/.625 (1.099) with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. 

• Micah Bello played in three of the games. He went 5-for-13 (.385) and had two doubles and a home run. 

What’s Next? The Timber Rattlers are scheduled to be on the road again this coming week with a trip to Great Lakes. 

Pitching Probables (LHP Antoine Kelly, RHP Ryne Moore, TBD, RHP Justin Jarvis, TBD, Antoine Kelly)

Low-A: Carolina Mudcats 
Week: 2-4, hosting Myrtle Beach   
Season: 30-27 overall, tied with Fredericksburg and Lynchburg at the top of the Carolina League North Division. The teams are two games ahead of Salem as well.  

For the week, the Mudcats were a perfect 2-0 on days that they played a double-header. Unfortunately, they went 0-4 on the days that they played just one game. Carolina was outscored 38-22 for the week, a 16-run differential. However, they were outscored by 14 in the final two games of the weekend. 

• Another week, another top spot for Jackson Chourio. In six games, he went 6-for-22 and hit .273/.333/.682 (1.015) with a double, a triple, two homers, and three RBI.  

• Eduardo Garcia played all six games and went 7-for-23. He hit .304/.333/609 (.942) with a double, two homers, and five RBI. 

• Hedbert Perez went 6-for-22 and hit .273/.304/.591 (.895) with a double, two homers, and four RBI.

• Edwin Jimenez made a start for the Mudcats. He threw five shutout innings. He gave up two hits, hit a batter, and struck out three.  

What’s Next? The Mudcats head to Columbia to take on the Fireflies.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 

Hitter of the Week: Outfielder Noah Campbell, Biloxi Shuckers  

During the past week, Noah Campbell celebrated his 23rd birthday. He also had a terrific week at the plate for the Biloxi Shuckers.

Campbell was the Brewers’ 19th round draft pick out of his North Carolina high school in 2017.  He didn’t sign and instead, he went to the University of South Carolina for three years. He played in 97 games over his first two seasons. In 2020, he played in 14 games before Covid shut down the season. He went undrafted in the five-round draft that year, but like TJ Shook and Brandon Knarr, he agreed to sign with the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent for the $15,000 signing bonus allowed. 

Campbell made his pro debut and hit .270/.388/.387 (.775)  with 21 doubles, two triples, and five home runs with the Carolina Mudcats in 2021. He also was 20-for-23 in stolen base attempts. 

He has spent the 2022 season at Double-A. In 27 games, he has hit .259/.362/.444 (.806) with seven doubles, a triple, and two home runs despite skipping the High-A level. He has had a couple of stints on the IL already this season. 

Last week, he played in five games for the Shuckers. He went 6-for-12 and hit .500/.571/1.083 (1.654) with a double, two home runs. He also walked twice. 

Campbell is a really good athlete with tremendous speed and a ton of potential. He played in the infield in college, and has played mostly in left field this year when healthy.   

Pitcher of the Week: LHP Brandon Knarr, Biloxi Shuckers  

Last week, our season-starting streak of Wisconsin starting pitchers to win this weekly award came to an end when a Timber Rattlers reliever was the selection. This week is the first time that a pitcher from another affiliate takes the award. This week’s winner is Biloxi Shucker left-hander Brandon Knarr. 

Knarr is no stranger to this award. He won it twice (and probably could have a few more times) when he was with Wisconsin. He made 10 starts for the Rattlers and went 7-2 with a 1.57 ERA. In 57 1/3 innings, he walked 13 and struck out 65 batters. 

Last week, Knarr earned his promotion to Double-A Biloxi and made his first start. He gave up one run on five hits over six innings in his start. He walked two and struck out eight batters. 

It has been a circuitous route to this point in Knarr’s baseball career. He originally went to college at Notre Dame. Then he went to the College of Central Florida for a season. In 2020 he went to the University of Tampa. He went undrafted and signed with the Brewers.
