Upcoming Roster Moves on 6/6-7

 Share

With Adames & Renfroe set to return to the active roster in the next few days, what two bats are removed?

It seems Reyes has to stay to serve as the backup SS

Does Huira return to Nashville? (Probably not … even though he offers nothing defensively & little offensively)

Is Cain a DFA candidate? (I don’t think so, sadly … because of his history & salary + his defensive value)

Why keep Kelley & Suter over some of the other promising middle relief options like Luke Barker?

If CC keeps 13 pitchers, and if Urias doesn't go on the DL, somebody between Cain-McCutchon-Hiura-Reyes has to go.  I would imagine Reyes stays to spell Adames until Urias gets healthy. Cain would be the obvious choice to DFA. He's been way beyond awful with the bat (.169/.227/.450). He's washed-up. McCutchon has been horrendous too. He isn't much better than Cain (.205/.256/.551).  Hiura has been so bad, almost half of his PAs end up in a strike out.  He is 6 for his last 37 PAs with 19 Ks.

Can we also acknowledge he's got a .324 OBP and .744 OPS during these 37PA. Over this same time period (since May 23) the Brewers as a whole have a .284 OBP and .638 OPS. Keston doesn't seem like the biggest problem right now even though he's struggling.

To me a large problem the team seems to have is that the highest paid guys are doing really bad, but a team like the Brewers can't just release millions of dollars without being absolutely sure it's the right move.

I think Cain is toast.  The article about his struggles in the Athletic a couple days ago signaled to me that he's resigned to it too.  He basically admitted he can't seem to find his swing.  Most athletes are very prideful.  They don't want to embarrass themselves and that's exactly what he's doing.

bear in mind that although a 40-man spot is open, there are currently no pitchers on optional assignment who are eligible for recall anytime soon without a corresponding injured list move. angel perdomo is on nashville's injured list.

peter strzelecki (optioned 3 june) and ethan small (optioned 31 may) each have to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment unless replacing a player on the injured or leave list.

fortunately, the brewers have today and next monday off, so that helps rest their pitching staff. given that, it is possible that the brewers could choose to option two pitchers for the activation of willy adames and hunter renfroe, and then option pablo reyes in a few days when luis urias is 100% and select a non-roster pitcher.

Just heard Counsell on MLB Radio … Renfroe returns tonight & Adames is “close” but will not be activated today (implied) …said he tweaked his hammy in Nashville - will go through a workout this afternoon - should be activated soon
