Article: Brewers Minor League Link Report (6/3): Four Affiliates, Five Finals, Three Wins

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Hey, we're only two days away (Monday the 6th) from the complex league games! Action in the Dominican will continue to begin late-mornings (Sunday's off), with Arizona-based fun in the evenings. We already know 90% of DSL box scores will have a note of "sunny, 85 degrees", while we'll prepare for the triple-digit readings in the desert. We will (somehow) often recap as many as eight games a day, yikes, as the Crew has two teams in both locales.

Transactions:

- RHP Luke Barker's contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville
- C Alex Jackson's contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville
- INF/OF Pablo Reyes' contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing INF Mike Brosseau, who was placed on the MLB Brewers' 10-day injured list)

- RHP Peter Strzelecki optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers

- C Alex Hall designated for assignment, though we should expect him back with High-A Wisconsin in the near future

- LHP Nick Bennett assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville

Plenty to digest above:

The Rodriguez and Pinero leg injuries (waiting for specific word) are troublesome.

Over on our Minor League Forum, Daniel details the exploits of the departing players, wishing them well here.

As for the newcomer:

Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: Nashville 8, Durham (Rays) 4
Box Score / Game Log

Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine:

Sounds Bounce Back to Even Series in Durham - Corey Ray’s Grand Slam, Willy Adames’ Homer Propels Nashville Past Bulls

You can get caught up on all things Sounds with the Voice of the club, Jeff Hem, at the 17:00 mark of the Main Street Sports Today Friday broadcast

The career path has been awkwardly painful, both from a performance and injury standpoint, for Corey Ray. Consider how different the Brewers big league roster would be if the now-27-year-old Ray had come even a bit close to fulfilling the potential of a 5th overall pick. Lorenzo Cain would have still been signed prior to 2018 (Ray posted a .678 OPS at High-A in a middling 2017 season at Carolina). But Jackie Bradley Jr. certainly wouldn't have been signed, which means Hunter Renfroe isn't a Brewer today. The permutations go beyond that, but the fact remains that Ray is in his final option year and still has the better part of four months to prove any worth at all towards 2023.

Speaking of the big-league club, pretty huge that Willy Adames was able to post five plate appearances (1-for-3 with a home run and two walks as you just read in the filed game report). Let's go boom, shall we?

It appears Adames has a scheduled day off Saturday before playing again Sunday.

Enough can't be said about RHP Caleb Boushley's bullpen-saving highly-effective seven-inning 102-pitch effort here. (Was that enough hyphen's for you?)

Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box

Final:  Pensacola (Marlins) 9, Biloxi 8
Box Score / Game Log

Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review:

Lutz' Late Homer Comes Up Short as Wahoos Walk Off Shuckers 9-8 - Devanney Homers For Second Consecutive Day

As one might imagine, plenty of action to dissect and Voice of the Shuckers Garrett Greene does a fine job within that recap.

There's an elephant in the room, and that'd be Joey Wiemer's absence since his mid-game exit on Tuesday. With this being a road game, the Biloxi pre-game audio show is not available via MiLB.TV. It's possible Garrett made specific mention to the reason for Wiemer's sideline stint during that or his game call. One thing I've learned over these many years of daily summaries for you all, is not to put the affiliate broadcasters on the spot regarding player injuries. If the Brewers organization is not making specific mention of an injury status, then we need to be respectful of the spot the broadcasters are put in.

(It helps immensely and frees up the broadcast crews when an injury was obviously related to an on-the-field incident available via video, but that wasn't the case with Wiemer.)

That being said, little birdies find a way to reach us from time to time, but unfortunately because it's unsubstantiated, I can't reveal whether the news gets a thumb up or a thumb down. Read into that last sentence as you wish, the hint is pretty blatant.

About these highlights coming from Pensacola's beautiful ballpark, if you pick up on a tinge of excitement in the Shuckers' positives, it's because Biloxi's #2 Voice, Thomas Zinzarella, slid over to the Blue Wahoos booth to help cover for an absence. Nice work, Thomas!

It's the morning of June 4th, and Jakson Reetz' OPS is at 1.123 in an offensively-challenged league (despite the final score here). Incredible.

Sal Frelick's first 80 AA at-bats have produced a .595 OPS and three extra-base hits (two doubles and a triple). Joey Wiemer's OPS in his first 176 AB's at AA is .931. Just sayin', prospect rankers...

21-year-old up-from-Maryvale fill-in Terence Doston finally had an "oh, this is AA" night (0-for-4, four K's), but the young man had been absolute money in his Shucker efforts prior. Head high, Terence.

Before the fun T-Rat game details, let's recognize! Oh Canada! ?

Tristan Peters Wins Midwest League Player of the Month Award for MayMinor League Baseball recognizes outstanding month for Rattlers outfielder

Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box

Final: Wisconsin 7, Peoria (Cardinals) 4
Box Score / Game Log

Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review:

Gray and Acosta Homer in Wisconsin Win over Peoria - Gray cracks four hits as Rattlers snap scoreless streak at 23-2/3 innings

Monster game for Joe Gray, Jr. Chris Mehring puts his many years of game recap experience into another fine effort just linked - includes your reminder on the Udder Tuggers jersey auction link! Folks, big leaguer Alex Hall's jersey among those available!

It's usually a bit of a nuisance (sorry, but it is, we're trying to type up a report here!) when we have to look into an early exit. Wes Clarke pinch hit for catcher Darrien Miller in the 4th. But thanks to the remarkable media conglomerate that is Wisconsin Timber Rattlers baseball, the Rattler Radio postgame podcast comes to the rescue.

"Mehring & Kyle Lobner discuss the turning points and performances of the game. Joe Gray Jr (4-for-5, HR, 2RBI, SB) and Cam Robinson (2IP, 0R, SV) have some comments from the clubhouse. Nick Stanley gives updates on Joe Ayrault & Darrien Miller, his reactions to the game, and the Alex Hall story."

Everyone, if you've never listened to the podcast (and why the heck not?!), then this episode is a wonderful maiden voyage for you, do yourself a favor and drink in the 23 minutes. The Alex Hall stuff is "gold, Jerry, gold"!

By the way, initial report on Miller is "cramping, we'll see".

Carolina Pre-Doubleheader Media Notes

Final, Completion of Thursday's suspended game: Carolina 7, Lynchburg (Guardians) 4
Box Score /
Game Log
My co-worker Daniel dived into much of this one in his report yesterday.

Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review:

Chourio and Quero Homer in 7-4 Carolina Victory - The Mudcats snapped a two-game skid with a 7-4 victory in Lynchburg

Final, Game Two: Lynchburg 6, Carolina 1
Box Score /
Game Log

Carolina Offense Stifled in 6-1 Loss - Jackson Chourio went 1-for-3 while extending his hitting streak to ten straight games

Thanks to the parents of afore-mentioned Jakson Reetz spelling his name that way just to avoid any possible confusion with the other OPS beast (.932 Chourio).

Saturday's action is all under the lights. Enjoy, everyone!

The Biloxi write-up above? Absolute, 100%, chef's kiss. That's the stuff that brought me here those many 'Brewer Fan' years ago, @Mass Haas. If there is a such a thing as a 'poet laureate' for Minor League baseball, you win that award on a yearly basis.

7 more stolen bases on Darrien Miller tonight. He is now seeing a 92.2% successful stolen base rate on his arm. That's a 7.8% throw-out rate in 2022. This is entering some really rough territory. Addendum: obviously, it isn't all on a catcher. But, there's something here. They touch on it in the podcast. Give it a listen.
