Lorenzo Cain performance thread

The signing made no sense at the time as he flat out can't hit righties and spending that much money on the short side of a platoon is a poor use of resources. Counsell playing him everyday is just making things worse. I am sure to receive criticism for this but I wonder if Stearns hasn't already checked out especially since many of the Mets moves last offseason were the types of transactions he would make.

Right on! He only averaged 28 homers per 162 games during his time with the Phillies and had a .787 OPS, they should drop him (and Cain) at the 1/4 mark of the season.

When he’s healthy, McCutchen is still a decent slugger and likely will turn it around.

Same with Cain, if he stays healthy he’ll provide enough offense to make it worthwhile to play him for his defensive prowess.

You might want to check out how McCutchen has hit against righties the last few years and good luck if you believe that Cain will provide enough offense in any way.

With Taylor on fire and Renfrow relatively close to returning (hopefully) I think it makes it an easy chose to make him the 4th OF. Probably a late inning defensive sub at times.  While you guys are in Cutch I think a lefty/righty platoon with Huira works and if Cutch starts hitting he can get some AB's back against righties.

Indeed I am aware of the splits, yet everything I said was true. With the Phillies, McCutchen had a .787 OPS and averaged 28 homeruns per 162 games. Let's be honest if anyone thought he was still the 2013 Andrew McCutchen he wouldn't be playing in Milwaukee on a one year bargain-rate contract. If he hit 20 homeruns and had a .780 OPS for the Brewers, they'd probably be happy with the return on their 8.5 million dollar commitment.

As for Lorenzo Cain, I'm a believer that players don't suddenly "lose it" over night, but there are exceptions to every rule (If in fact his OPS is still sub .500 come July, I could see him being designated for assignment).

That being said, Cain has been about a .700 OPS player with good to great defense for Milwaukee since 2019. Do I think he could still get his OPS up into the 650 range and make it worthwhile playing him regularly to take advantage of that good to great defense? I do, but he's dug himself a pretty big hole, and if/when the team is 100% healthy he likely will lose playing time as Yelich, Taylor and Renfroe are significantly better offensive options.

I think they're clearly AAAA guys at this point, but would it make sense to bring up Dahl, Johnny Davis, or Almonte from Nashville? They're all having pretty good years in AAA.

Otherwise, the in-house help could come from Joey Wiemer, though he has had a mini-slump lately.

I don’t think any of Dahl, Davis, Almonte see MKE unless two of Yelich, Renfroe, Taylor, Cain, McCutchen are hurt at the same time.

Even then, as long as it isn’t Cain/TT that are injured simultaneously as the only real CF options, Craig has shown enough faith in Jace playing corner OF that he is prolly the defacto 6th OF at this point.

You responded to a comment about McCutchen vs righties and then posted all stats.  .683, .652, .558 (this year) ops vs righties the last 3 years.  Players normally gradually get worse as they progress into their mid 30's.  And at this point its just about 1/3 into the season.  You can argue hes going to get better if you want, but including stats vs lefties in response to a post about him hotting righties is misleading.

I should say that I liked the signing because hed still been hitting lefties, am fine with him in the lineup vs lefties (for now), and I havent called for him to be DFA'ed.

I would guess that he was a little cringey seeing another key player going hard into a wall when they're ready down Adames and Renfroe.

I wouldn't read much more into it than that.

I was a little cringey too.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

His effort is lacking too. Can he run out a grounder? Can he get a jump on a fly ball? Looks lazy and old now.  Throwing a fly ball back to the infield looks a lot like work for him…. And that’s not new.

He still ranks as one of our best defenders(tied with Jace in dwar for best on the team)

His bat has certainly left him but he's still a great defensive CF
