I use to visit and post on the brewers.com message board all the time. Then, 4 years ago or so, I stummbled upon this site. I slowly migrated over here and I rarely even visit the Brewer message board any more. I really enjoy the intelligent conversation from people who are true baseball fans. I get most of my Brewer new from here. I love this site.

Having said that, I am also a very cynical and sarcastic type of person. I know these are not great traits, but sorry, it's how I am. So, I do find my self biting my toungue at times and not really responding the way I'm actually thinking for fear of being kicked off. When I really have to bite my toungue is when someone posts a question about something that could easily be found with a simple search on Yahoo and Google. Yes, it's not always a simple search that can get the answer, but sometimes it's as simple as going to brewers.com or tripadvisor.com for hotel information. I know, I know....got to be nice. But sometimes I just want to quote Bruce Dickinson...I mean hey, your already on the internet, now come on "explore the space".

Rather than a fear of being banned, a poster's motivation should be a desire to present him/herself in a way which garners respect. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

When I really have to bite my tongue is when someone posts a question about something that could easily be found with a simple search on Yahoo and Google.
Yeah, that can be annoying when it's apparent the person didn't try. But I don't see it as a significant issue on this board.

My tongue-biting comes when I see the plethora of outfield threads on the Major League Forum. They might not start out as duplicates, but as soon as they get rolling, most of them end up being duplicates.

Give a man a sarcastic fish, you annoy him today. Teach a mean how to fish, he hopefully won't annoy you for a lifetime.

I'm a pretty cynical and sarcastic person as well. I have friends that it's just a way of life with, and I enjoy taking it as much as I enjoy dishing it out. However, the problem with the internet is that feelings get hurt fast because there are no non-verbal hints that you're not just being a jerk.

There are ways to phrase things that will give the exact same meaning as what might come naturally. I'm not going to remove someone site for a sarcastic remark here and there (although, don't take it as carte blanche), I'm referring to the people with the consistent holier than thou attitudes (other than myself http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ).

Those are great traits in my opinion. Probably because they apply to me too. I love sarcastic people. (Notice this is not in blue font).

I love those type of posts. When someone posts a dumb question like that, I just put a link to google in my response. Hopefully they get the point.

I'll be the first to admit that I probably don't search on google or anything as much as I should. However, sometimes I or others ask questions that we're looking for actual experience/user reviews of things.

Somebody mentioned tripadvisor.com. Well, that's fine and dandy and does have alot of information. But sometimes it's also nice to see some other opinions from people that you genuinely trust (aka Brewerfan.net members) that have actually been to those places and can give their own words of wisdom.

I'll try to google things more often, I guess. Whenever I do, though, it seems somebody always shoots down my response that I found on google. Maybe I'm imagining things.

To me, user reviews are one thing. That makes total sense.

The issue I'm talking about is "does anyone know what Rickie's hitting with RISP?". That's just laziness.

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a violation issue. It's a new pet peeve that didn't start to bother me until recently.

Anyway, I've noticed that as soon as a batting order is posted to a thread, the thread stands an excellent chance of getting sidetracked, or in some cases, even hijacked. While the first batting order posted may be relevant to the discussion at hand, the responses tend to have more batting orders. As an example, a thread about Bill Hall can eventually become a thread debating where Hart or Gwynn should hit.

The ironic thing is that these batting orders are often posted as a message's pièce de résistance. The message will start with some good content relevant to the thread, then... Voila! Lookie here! You can have this batting order! I guess I find the part of the post without the batting order a lot more interesting.

I second that.

In my opinion, there have been way too many lineup posts lately that are completely unnecessary. Pretty much any thread involving a possible roster move of any sort will feature several posts with suggested lineups.

There are three threads on the first page of the ML forum that have lineups posted in them. I just don't see the necessity of repeatedly posting lineups.

Yowsa! That's a lot of duplication.

We seem to have a lot of bullpen threads, too. Members should check more carefully to see if their thoughts will fit into an existing thread.

i'd really welcome posters being mindful of paragraph structures.

if your typing exceeds five lines of straight text, it's probably a good idea to hit enter twice and put some space within those thoughts.

it makes it a lot easier on the eyes and will entice me to keep reading.

I agree, Scott. I like the five line idea as a guideline.

Because the internet is a medium that's usually read on-screen, it's generally best to use short paragraphs. Ideal 'internet' paragraphs are likely to be shorter than the "well developed" paragraphs we were taught to write in school.

Generally three to four sentences is plenty. If paragraphs contain compound or complex sentences, four sentences may even be too many.

I find breaking up my posts to be pretty easy. I often break up my original paragraphing by simply looking for any excuse I can find to begin a new one.

On the other hand, I tend to write long sentences. Addressing that is much harder than paragraphing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif:" />

There were a couple of interesting comments in the ""What's Bugging You?" thread.

DHonks stated:

Official threads. It seems like we are having a lot of "the official (Steroids, Ryan Braun, Yo, etc) thread"
I agree, but I'm not sure where to suggest we go with this. Maybe "Official" designation should be given some kind of 'reserved' status? At any rate, I'm perfectly happy with the idea of members using the term less often.

And rwa12 stated:

An offshoot of the "official threads" rant. It bothers me when people start threads with "I know this should be in the IGT, or Vent, or blah blah blah" If you know this, then why not put it there? These threads get locked or redirected in the first few minutes, why not just post where you are supposed to? Just because you have a slightly different slant than an existing topic does not neccesarily require a separate post. Now please excuse me while I go start a new post entitled "What's bothering me is more important than what is bothering you"

Sorry if this has been covered previously, just noticing a lot of it lately.

rwa12 says it all. I don't think there's anything that needs to be added.

Wow.. I went away for awhile and it looks like all hell broke loose around here..

But I have to agree, nothing worse than seeing what passes for discussion look something like:

"NED YOST ---KIN SUCKS, THEY SHOULD FIRE HIS DUMB ASS"

Oh really? How nice for you, and thank you for that... It adds nothing, it says nothing, it is invective for it's own sake..

Brian, I appreciate your sentiments, and you've inspired me as well to give it another try -- a year older and perhaps a bit wiser. Your vision of smart and civil discourse isn't easy to pull off anywhere, and I'm not sure it's going especially well here, but I'll try not to make matters worse.

Not sure how I'll do with the short paragraphs admonition, though.

Greg.

To continue on the "Keep bf.net beautiful" thought, I have to say the Major League forum, as well as the Minor League forum, have become far too cluttered with sticky's at the top of the page. I feel like every few days there is a new one added to the top, and now you have to scroll down to even begin to see others post's. I love the site however, I know it's tough on you guys, so sorry for the gripe, it's just getting frustrating to keep logging on to see more sticky's than the day before.
