Running Article Tracker

First off let me say that if Brian and the mods want to continue to place each and every article regarding the brewers in one thread that is fine. My feeling is that it has its place when outside newspapers or espn does a piece on the team. When local writers though write editorials I think it should have its own thread because it will garnish more attention in its own thread and its a piece that will have more feedback then just people respondings " its nice to get national attention, nice piece of writing". To me when articles are written in the future calling for future moves to be made or responding to them, i would make more sense to me to have them in their own thread.

While its close i think Gerry Woeffels last 2 articles on the team are more editorials than just articles, and would make for some decent discussion in its own thread. Just what i feel.

I totally agree in theory. Big articles should have their own threads so we don't need to search through a long thread - especially when people are still discussing another article and they risk getting garbled. The only problem is defining "big article" and getting posters to follow such guidelines.

I think you're right that there are occasions where it makes sense to have a separate thread for an article. The hard part is knowing when something is going to generate a page or 2 of discussion and when something is going to have just a couple of replies.

How about starting each article in the Tracker thread, and if someone wants to start a discussion on one, start a separate thread called something like "Discussion: Woeffel 6/21/07 editorial"?

A link to the Discussion thread could be added to the original Tracker post for the article in question.

Just an offhand thought.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Hawing, I think that is a good idea, but I still can see how it can be abused, as others have said. I agree that there are some articles that will generate no discussion, while posters still may feel that need to start a separate thread for whatever reason. I like the idea of the tracker, its a good way to keep all the articles from this season inone place so that they may be found at a later time. I believe all articles found should be placed there. I just think the ones that can generate 20+ responses in the thread should have there own. Maybe we should go with hawings idea and see how it works. It would be kind of like the draft threads, where there is one only for picks, and one for any specific discussion among posters.

Folks are fortunate that we allow such freedom of our posters to even start threads.

The equivalent portion of Sons of Sam Horn, for instance, forces folks to shoehorn discussions into a limited number of mega-threads, with as few as 3-5 threads being started each day.

A running article thread is fine, a moderator can always update the Thread Title to indicate what the latest article is about.

i agree. sure, a one-paragraph blurb isn't going to be too important, but Brewer-focused editorials I'd enjoy as a separate topic. so many writers make wild comments that would be fun to debate with some real numbers and further analysis. i often miss out on good articles because i don't usually feel like plowing through the huge article tracker thread and picking out what to read. it would mean a few low-post threads, but generate a lot of good discussion on many others.

This thread seems to be an excellent example of how to start a thread related to an article outside of the article tracker: Boo Birds

Note that the main content of the message is the poster's thoughts. The article kind of 'slides in' as a reference.

Also, keep this in mind: if a thread has a title like "Rosenthal aritcle" or "Hunt column", it's going to send up a huge red flag, complete with marching band accompaniment, and is 99.999% likely to be locked.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
