  • 2 weeks later...

Reading between the lines here, it looks like they are considering going with an "opener" version of Freddy the next time we need a fifth starter, which is next weekend, and then building up his pitch count in each start thereafter.

This is an interesting situation. But, with 3 off days in the next 11 days, I wonder if it would make sense to keep Peralta on schedule with a couple more rehab starts instead of using him as an opener this week.

The way things line up for the rotation now, these could be the Brewers starters for the next two weeks:

Ashby

Off

Burnes

Woodruff

Lauer

Ashby

Fifth

Burnes

Off

Woodruff

Lauer

Off

Ashby

Burnes

Woodruff

These last 3 games would be against the Cardinals, where you really want Burnes and Woodruff. Those 3 games are the first of 13 games in 13 days. The Brewers will need the fifth starter twice in the next 10 days     and a few more times when they play 18 games in 17 days from August 26 to September 11.

I might prefer using someone else as the fifth starter on Saturday and working Peralta into the rotation after he has had a little more time to build up on rehab

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

again, have to wait how things shake out post-trading deadline, but given the current roster, could easily option peter strzelecki and recall jason alexander for a spot start. then option alexander after the game and either recall trevor kelley or activate one of jake cousins, luis perdomo or justin topa.

6. Houser (remember that guy?)

Pretty nice.

Yeah, Burnes has been Burnes.

Outside of that, Woody & Lauer only recently got their ERA+ on the good side of 100.

Peralta & Houser have been hurt/ineffective. Ashby has had rookie struggles. Chubby bald guy from Seinfeld started some games.

Add/subtract it all up & FanGraphs has the rotation 13th in runs allowed WAR (8.1) and 9th in FIP WAR (8.3).

With Hader’s bad couple weeks the bullpen hasn’t fared much better, 8th in rWAR (3.5) and 13th in fWAR (2.3)

Pretty nuts that this team is where it is right now considering the strength of their team has underperformed to this point, while the much maligned offense, 5th in runs per game (4.67) and 8th in WAR (16.0), has carried the team so far.

Gotta love this crazy game.

In his 6 starts since coming off the DL, Woodruff has thrown 35 IP, with 48K, a 2.05 ERA, 1.41 FIP, .530 OPS against (with a .313 BABIP).

Woody has been Woody since his DL stint.

With the  off days I'm wondering if the plan is to give the rest of the rotation an extra day of rest to keep them strong for the home stretch.
