2022 Bucks Offseason thread

Feel pretty good about Bobby coming back. Seems to genuinely like it here & think ownership will pony up after he took a team friendly deal last season.

Current roster looks something like…

Jrue | Hill | Vildoza

Grayson | Pat

Khris | Beauchamp

Giannis | Thanasis

Brook | Sandro

Only real trade chips for salary matching are probably Brook (14 million), Grayson (8,.5) and Hill (4).

Also believe they can sign Portis with Bird Rights so they should have some sort of Mid Level Exception to bring in a non-minimum free agent, though I’d imagine that also would come with some luxury tax implications.

More or less expect them to run it mostly back, but will be interesting to see if Horst comes through with a Special Delivery.

It is rumored that Oladipo will not be returning to the Heat.  Some of the rumors have him going to Washington, Denver or Detroit on the MLE which doesn't make any sense at least not Washington or Detroit on the MLE.  I could see Denver but I would think Bucks, Warriors, Lakers, 76ers or Nets would be more appealing to Oladipo on the MLE.  Bucks and Lakers would probably be more appealing as there is a shot at more playing team at SG.

Also the Bucks did trade into the 2nd round and picked up Hugo Besson but he will be a stash player and won't count against the cap.  Besson will continue to play in New Zealand or more than likely in Europe.

Bobby Portis re-signs. Four years

Also...

He's 34 and coming off a knee injury but he can shoot it. Also, he's cocky as hell...in kind of a hilarious way.

Durant has also requested a trade the East should be a lot easier next year assuming Durant isn’t going to an East team.  Durant doesn’t have a no trade clause and can be traded to whatever team offers the Nets the most.

I’m seeing a lot of speculation online that Ingles may not play at all this season or else will miss considerable time. Therefore giving him the full MLE seems dubious. Horst is normally more right than wrong, so I:m sure he knows more than

Bucks took care of business tonight. Bobby, Carter, Matthews, Ingles. All good. We essentially are bringing back the band next season (plus Ingles) - which is just fine. Let's hope injuries dog bite us. But if they do, we have more depth this year. But it'll be good to have Matthews and Carter for a full season. And Lopez healthy - as well as Hill.

Frankly, there's wasn't tons more we could do without making a drastic move. But I don't think that was needed. Team will be good.

My perfect FA was to bring back Carter and Portis. Happy that they got Matthews too.  If Ingles can recover and be back for the 2nd half, its a great signing, but thats a we shall see. Horst did have a good day though.

Jingles is a bit of a gamble for sure at his age coming off an ACL, but the only other free agent to sign for 1/6.5 so far is Lonnie Walker with LAL, so kinda slim to none pickings.

Best case, he comes back sometime down the stretch run (looks like Jan 30 was when he tore it) & knocks down a bunch of threes (.423 3P% on 5 attempts per game from 2016-21).

If nothing else it creates a salary slot that could be used at the deadline & is just a one year deal so they’ll have almost 25 million in expiring contracts with Jingles, Brook & Hill.

If the Nets offered Durant to the Bucks for Middleton and a 1st would you take it?

I am kind of on the fence here.  While I love Durant I think overall Middleton gives the Bucks a better chance to win due to his defense compared to Durant’s.  But oh man the offense would be awesome as teams wouldn’t be able to build a wall against Giannis with Durant on the team.

My concern would be that he is 33 and has 4 years left on his deal, while MIddleton only has 2 years left and is only 30. Thats Giannis’s buddy so I don’t think they will do it for that reason alone.

Also he did completely screw the Nets. They brought in Kyrie and traded Harden to appease him and now they are stuck with probably their only “star” being Ben Simmons with no draft picks. Also they paid him a year of max salary to rehab.

I would say yes and not get off the phone until it was called in to the league office. KD is a step above KM.

Yeah, even though Durant is older & more expensive than Middleton, he’d definitely be an upgrade as a Giannis sidekick.

Think the Nets will end up with a better deal than that though, especially since the Bucks have limited FRPs after the Jrue trade.

If KD really wanted to help his legacy or whatever he’d go to some young, upcoming team & try to put them over the top.

Instead he’ll probably end up in Phoenix & try to help CP3 finally get his ring.

Not sure why but the Bucks thought it was a good idea to bring back Ibaka on a 1-year deal.

I would assume it was for the vet minimum so it would be a big body off of the bench. He did provide very little after the DDV trade though.

He had some solid showings before Lopez came back, but was pretty much relegated to mop-up duty after that.

Bucks released Tucker and Vildoza days before summer league games start and after the roster was released. I think the easiest explanation is that they had firm professional contract offers overseas and the bucks let them pursue it as a courtesy.  If thats not the case, obviously the will sign 2 guys that they wanted to get a look a close look at more.

Tucker and Vildoza have been waived.  Nwora has a qualifying offer from the Bucks roster is currently at 14 right now.  If Nwora signs the QO it will be at 15 the max.  The Bucks the last few years have only carried 14 players in the roster plus the two two way spots.

Some changes to the rules are coming for the 2023-2024 season.  Take fouls will no longer be an on the side foul and will change to 1 free throw and possession to the team being fouled.  The team can also select the player they want to shoot the free throw.

What this means is that teams won't be able to stop a fast break by committing a foul.  Which I have always found as dumb it is a smart play by the player but just dumb for the team that made a good play and has to inbound the ball with the defense being able to set to stop the play.  This will increase action on the court which is a good thing.

The play in tournament looks to be staying permanently also.

Both are good rule changes. it was always dumb to basically penalize the team that got a steal and fast break. Plus the fast break fouls can tend to have a larger injury risk.

While the play in tournament is corny, its fine. Its no different than what MLB does now for wild card rounds.
