Game Thread (5/15/2022): Brewers (Woodruff) at Marlins (Hernandez) - 12:40 PM CDT

Eye Black

With Ashby evidently set to come in relief of Woody. I am starting to wonder if we will see Ethan Small make his major league debut on Wednesday afternoon. They've been trying to give that extra day's rest to each starter, and without an off-day until Thursday, Wednesday would be the spot for a sixth starter...

Your right, he’ll probably win the Cy Young award this year. After three years of one of the best he is due to win the award.

If this is an attempt at sarcasm, it's a failure...

There's usually a pretty decent difference between performance and results.  Woodruff's fip is 3.61.  His xfip is 3.25.  He's throwing the ball well, spotting it well, and generally "performing" the same as he has in the past three years.  If you believe in the data, you're going to be good with that and accept that over the course of 30 or so starts, his stats should normalize.

The results haven't been there.  ERA is a wonky stat.  We've known that for a while now.  If you're a person who doesn't like these fancy newfangled nerd stats, you probably think Woodruff is struggling and that's fine.  At the end of the year, nobody gets a trophy for best xFIP.  They get a trophy for division titles and WS titles.  Results are what matters.  But in between that, if you dissect the data, you will see that Woodruff isn't struggling, it's just a blip on the radar of a small sample size, and he's gonna get through it.

And we'll be fine.

You are quite judgmental. It must be hard to live up to your astronomically high standards.

It seemed like sarcasm to me and you just didn't put it in the blue font, but maybe I'm wrong. If that is the case, I'm sorry.

I'd rather see Ashby be a multi-inning stopper like Hader was when he came up initially, and maybe be an occasional emergency spot starter.  I know his role is eventually going to be a starter, but right now it just feels like he's more suited for the pen, and that's definitely where the team has more need of him at the current time as well.

Great inning from Ashby. I believe his place is in the bullpen for now. Could really help stabilize that back-end after recent struggles.

Perhaps he should continue to come in from the pen from here on out?
