My eyes are focusing more on this last round of starts, where Houser, Ashby, Woodruff, and Peralta all failed to finish 6 innings, and the first 3 didn’t even make it to into the 6th.

For pitchers who are touted as among the best in the league, Woodruff and Peralta aren’t covering a lot of innings.

Okay, but you made a general statement, and I pointed out that they're among the league leaders in quality starts. Yes, this latest turn through the rotation our starters haven't been going as long (though Peralta did go 5 2/3, which is about average for him). But the fact remains that our starting pitching, despite some uncharacteristic struggles from Woodruff, has been among the best in the majors in the early going and has covered more than enough innings. This isn't the 1980s. You're not going to have starters going more than 5/6 innings on a regular basis.

I understand that this isn’t the 80’s, so you can spare that lecture.
I don’t think it’s too much to expect pitchers like Peralta and Woodruff to complete 6 innings on at least a somewhat regular basis, especially when they are only being asked to pitch once every 6 days. I think they’ve each only done it once so far, and a few of their starts have been more than an inning short of that.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

If what you're trying to say is that Woodruff and Peralta haven't pitched as expected early on, including having some shorter than normal starts, then, yes, I agree. But the rotation as a whole has been good, and this includes being among the league leaders in quality starts and innings pitched.

That is basically what I said a few posts ago when I said that Peralta and Woodruff aren’t covering as many innings as they should.

Okay. Just wasn't clear, as it seemed to me you were talking about the rotation in general terms and wondering why they were struggling to cover innings and get quality starts, which is not the case at all.

I didn't expect my relatively offhanded comment about the Brewers SPs recent short starts to trigger so much analysis and critique and reminders about how the game has changed over the decades.

Because I don't see game threads as the ideal forum for that kind of discussion, maybe I will create a blog post to give the expanded version of the basic point I was getting at.
