Game Thread (5/10/2022): Brewers (Peralta) at Reds (Greene) - 5:40 PM CDT

Eye Black

The last few days have exposed the Brewers bullpen as not nearly the strong point everyone assumed it would be. And if the starters keep laboring to go 5 or 6 innings it’s going to become a big problem.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

WHERE IS HADER?

It's pretty ridiculous to have a closer who can't come into the 8th to get out of a jam.  I never thought we'd go back to the dumb 8th inning guy 7th inning guy 9th inning guy thing but here we are.

What starter routinely goes more than 6 innings nowadays? Maybe a Burnes/Scherzer type? That's it though.

There was zero chance of this version of Williams getting Naquin there. Too bad we don't have a hard throwing lefty to throw there.

It was a Vegas style light the size of the Belagio screaming....pull me.

That is a mistake a manager should make very rarely.

If Small is ready for the show let's see him already. Hoby and Suter are not the kind of lefty you go to in a big spot. I would like to see him get a shot or stop the Ashby yo yo and make him a lefty burner. They need help big time.

I could see this. Ashby has been much better in the pen this year.

The league average IP per game started is 5.0

The Brewers are at 5.3 IP per game started.

This is the new reality for MLB.  Not just the Brewers, but for everyone.

Sort of an interesting decision to continue to roll with Devin in this situation.

Interesting is one way to put it.  Yostian would be the way I would put it.

It’s probably time to go to Ashby as a reliever now.    The other guys aren’t doing their job.  We need someone else in there

im starting to worry when we start playing teams that can actually play baseball a little

I'd love to know if they are being extra careful with Hader due to his recent back issues, or if they just will never use him in a four-out role anymore. No better situation than there against Naquin with his extreme platoon splits.

I would like one of our esteemed beat reporters to ask Counsell why he can't go to our all-time lefty reliever to get one measly out against a lefty hitter, particularly when we have an off day coming up on Thursday....

I think one of the road blocks is simply that they haven’t added him to the 40-man roster and may not be eager to do so just yet.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Well he hasn't pitched multiple innings in years.  If you have a guy like Hader and you use him like this he's only going to pitch around 50 innings a year.  It's just a waste.
