will be interesting to see when hiura reports to the nashville club. the brewers could have hiura report to their taxi squad for part or all of the road trip, and thus, he remains with the brewers.

I like this move. I believe there are three options in Nashville that are better suited for the big league club than Hiura: Turang, Mathias, & Brosseau.

Turang as a LH bat would also be an upgrade over Peterson. Mathias & Brosseau are likely better RH options off the bench than Hiura. All three have greater positional flexibility.

This Hiura demotion makes sense to me … assuming Renfroe becomes an option at 1B should Rowdy need a day off.

I know everyone (including me) loves the clubhouse influence of Suter, but he would be another that might benefit from time in AAA to work out his early season struggles.

Sutter has enough service time to decline an option.

This is a decent move for keston. He just wasn't getting abs so let him get some consistency and if there's an injury he can come up and get a shot at constant work and hopefully show us what he's got.

This just in: our overall fringe depth is awesome. So many deserving players. I’ve been ringing this bell for weeks but we seriously have too many candidates right now worthy of that end of the bench role. Given Keston is pretty much a defensive net negative he is almost approaching: ‘Where does he fit?’ In the organization territory.

Being the Homer I am, I want all the worthy Triple-A guys to get some shots. What is not mentioned @edfunderburk, in your thoughtful post (all players you list are worthy candidates), is the merits of Weston Wilson who can definitively plug and play at 1B too. He should probably be added to that list. He has more versatility than everyone listed if we’re being honest and he is a darn good utility player.

Yes, I agree … I would have listed him too had I reviewed the Nashville roster. I wrote my post quickly & relied on my memory … but your point is valid & well taken.

I wish Counsell had used him right, and not as a sometime-platoon partner with Tellez, but as a platoon partner with McCutchen.  Hiura should have hit against at least half of the RH starting pitchers, to give him a decent shot.

Maybe he'll be back soon, after they move a reliever back to Nashville.

I've had Wilson as a top prospect precisely because of the versatility. Plays all four IF positions to one degree or another, not to mention LF and RF, plus he's eaten some innings in garbage time.

He was not bad but not good either. There is still hope for him but he really needs to cut down his strikeouts. Some regular playing time in AAA might be good for him. A productive AAA stint may also help his trade value if the team decides there is no place for him on our roster.

I really hoped that Keston had beat out Tellez, but alas a true competition never materialized. Can’t touch that Rowdy! I pull harder for Huira more than any other Brewer because I’d like to think that the Brewer organization could actually develop hitters, but double alas, it’s not to be. Hopefully Cain will come around and we’ll have that one Brewer farmhand that turned out okay. And as Mitchell and Frelick struggle I’m putting all my eggs in the Joey basket. Here’s hoping.

61.8% in zone contact percentage. League average is 84.2.

He is still missing pitches in the zone at a disastrous rate.

No doubt he's a talented athlete, and that 2019 production .303/.368/.570 is tantalizing. However, he's 26 and heading into arbitration this winter having yet to solidify a role on the team.  Also, it been three calendar years since those monster numbers in 2019 with no evidence since that he can approach that level of production again in the major leagues. (.194/.282/.363).

The problem is, Hiura  has nothing left to prove in AAA (.296/.392/.581) yet he isn't one of the Brewers 26 preferred players.

I think a more apt statement is the Brewers are hopeful they can salvage something out of Hiura. Otherwise as a player who will be out of options, without an every day role on the major league team and heading into arbitration he's on a path to be non-tendered after the season.

If there was nothing different to his approach then I'd agree there is nothing left for him to do in AAA. But he did make some changes. I think the mechanical changes he made can be worked on in AAA. It also might help his trade value. Some team is going to look at the tools and the production he had and think they can fix it. Or they may be a rebuilding team that has time to let him sink or swim and have someone that has no future in the rebuild process to give us.

The Brewers will trade Hiura before they non-tender him.  I wouldn't be surprised if he is traded during the deadline this year or even before that.  There are plenty of teams that will take on an Arb-1 player as a DH.  I wouldn't be surprised if that team is the Nationals or A's.

You could be correct, there is a chance they could trade Hiura before reaching a non-tender situation. However, given his current track record he has little value, and would most likely be in a "change of scenery" type trade, rather than in a deadline deal for top tier veteran talent.

Hiura in a trade to the Nationals for Bell wouldn't surprise me in the least.  I don't think it would be Hiura for Bell but Hiura would be in the trade package going back to the Nationals or Kemp for Hiura+  from the A's.

The Nationals GM will likely be fired before 2023, but even as a rental it would be a terrible move to trade Josh Bell for Hiura. They will have better offers, and would be ahead to take an A ball player with upside over a guy who can't crack the 26 man lineup of the Brewers and is out of options and about to get expensive.

If by "Kemp", you mean Tony Kemp, that's the caliber of lateral move I could see them making with Hiura, however they don't really need another player who is offensively challenged and only plays 2B/LF

Like maybe he can be a piece for Bryan Reynolds.......

Hiura has the same amount of remaining team control as Bryan Reynolds...

So what? It wouldn't be one for one. He could play every day in Pittsburgh with no pressure, if he can break out at the MLB level there he can be flipped for way more value than they'd give for him. Hiura holds value because despite his flaws, he's extremely talented and is probably just a few tweaks away from being really good.

Just like with the Brewers, from the Pirates perspective Hiura doesn't bring much to the table: indisputably talented but far removed from MLB success. But with a .973 career OPS in AAA nothing left to prove in the minors, will be out of options and heading into arbitration where his pay will grow exponentially.

When the Pirates trade Bryan Reynolds, they will be looking for a return of the most talent that could help them win 2-3 years from now; I don't believe they'd be interested in taking less of those type of players in order to add a Keston Hiura to their major league club.
